Graduate School and Bioresource and Bioenvironmental Sciences Kyushu University

Kyushu University currently offers a unique education and research program in the Graduate School of Bioresource and Bioenvironmental Sciences; namely, International Development Research Course – A Special Program for International Students.

A. Study Areas and the Number of Applicants The International Development Research Course of the Graduate School Bioresource and Bioenvironmental Sciences involves 8 departments: Applied Genetics and Pest Management, Plant Resources, Bioscience and Biotechnology, Animal and Marine Bioresources Sciences, Agricultural and Resources Economics, Bioproduction Environmental Sciences, Forest and Forest Products Sciences, and Genetic Resources Technology.

B. Eligibility 1. Applicants must be under 35 years old on April 1, 2008 2. * Master Course – Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) awarded by a postgraduate school outside Japan or expect to receive a Bachelor’s degree by September 30, 2008 * Doctor’s course - Applicants must hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) awarded by a postgraduate school outside Japan or expect to receive a Master’s degree outside Japan by September 30, 2008. Applicants who hold or expect to receive a Master’s degree awarded by an English course (program) of postgraduate school in Japan are also eligible. 3. Health: Candidates must be certified as both physically and mentally healthy by a qualified and recognized physician. 4. Language: Non-native English speakers must posses a sufficiently high official English qualification such as TOEFL, TOEIC or the Cambridge Certificate (a photocopy of the score obtained must attached. 5. * MEXT scholarship students must arrive in Japan between October 1 and 7, 2008 * Non-Mext Scholarship students must arrive in Japan before October 7, 2008

C. Benefits of the MEXT Scholarship 1. A Monthly stipend of 170,000 yen or 160,000 yen (after the thirteenth month of stay in Japan). The amount of stipend subjects to change depending on the annual budget each year. However this stipend will be suspended during periods of leave, absence or when the student remains off campus for prolonged periods of time without authorization. 2. Travel Expenses : Inbound travel and Return Travel. 3. Fees for the entrance examination, admission, and tuition will be waived. In addition, a sum of 25,000 yen for initial location expenses, 80 % of medical costs, and a limited allowance toward lodging costs (if living in private accommodation) will be available from the Association of International Education, Japan.

For MEXT scholarship applicants who pass the preliminary screening, originals plus one set of copies of the documents listed below should arrive at the Student Affairs Office of the Graduate School of Bioresource and Bioenvironmental Science no later than February 20, 2008.
