Aurelle Khadeeja Rizany, Jesslyn Christabella and Natasha, students of Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Indonesia (FD UI), won 3rd place in the International UGM Dental Student Research Competition. The team of FD UI Class of 2019 students under the guidance of drg. Benso Sulijaya Sp. Perio (K), Ph.D.
At the competition they researched “Knowledge of Dental Health Practitioners about the Use of Probiotics as Antibiotics Subtitions in the Treatment of Periodontal Disease“. This research was motivated by the frequent use of antibiotics to treat periodontitis patients.
“Often we meet Indonesian people who use it without a doctor’s advice and prescription. This has resulted in many patients experiencing antibiotic resistance. Judging from the phenomenon of the widespread use of antibiotics by the general public freely, we practitioners are interested in bringing up the theme,” said Aurelle on behalf of the team.
Based on research and expert studies, it is found that probiotic lactobacillus reuteri is often used as an alternative treatment for periodontitis patients. Departing from these problems, to deepen existing research and literature, a team of FD UI students together with their supervisors examined the level of knowledge and perceptions of dental practitioners consisting of co-asst students, general dentists, residents, and specialists.
“In this research competition we try to provide the best research results, the selection of this theme is very interesting considering periodontitis is a disease with a high prevalence in Indonesia, so effective but safe treatment is needed for patients. The more alternative treatments provided, one of which is probiotic lactobacillus reuteri, can help Indonesia be free from periodontitis. Hopefully, the results we obtained can help the world of health, especially teeth and mouth,” said Aurelle.
Dean of FD UI, Dr. drg. Nia Ayu Ismaniati, MDSc., Sp.Ort(K) responded positively to the success of the students who had made FD UI proud at the international level. “Obviously, this has a huge impact on the position of achievement and reputation of FD UI at the international level, hopefully in the future there will be more and more FD UI students who are motivated to hone their knowledge and experience by participating in various world-class competitions. In addition, I also want to appreciate the hard work and support of the supervisors who have directed and provided encouragement so that FD UI representatives are able to become champions,” he said.
In line with the Dean of FD UI, drg. Benso Sulijaya Sp. Perio (K), Ph.D., as the supervisor stated that he was also proud of the fighting spirit and healthy competition of the FD UI students he mentored who pushed themselves to progress and develop.
The UGM Dental Student Research Competition (UDSRC) organized by the Faculty of Dentistry of Universitas Gadjah Mada is a research competition that offers all preclinical medical students, clinical medical students, and/or international health science students to showcase their research results on dental topics, exchange ideas, and compete to become champions. Since the competition is held internationally, the participants will compete with dental students around the world.
