Two students of the Oral Medicine Specialist Education Program, Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Indonesia (FD UI) won the 4th International Conference on Dentistry & Oral Health (ICDOH) competition. This competition was organized by the Asia Pacific Association for Dental and Oral Health (APADENTO) which was attended by speakers from more than 10 countries from various parts of the world.

Thanks to “Non-Pharmacological Treatment Challenges of Sialorrhea in Parkinson’s Disease Patient”, drg. Sutrania Dewi Sulaksana won second place in the Scientific Award category of Oral Medicine & Radiology Category. In the previous stage, a month before the event was held, ICDOH participants sent abstracts to the committee. Then, participants did an online presentation in front of the judges for eight minutes and a two-minute question and answer session.

“Through this activity, I had a very valuable opportunity, appearing to present an applicable case management report, namely Sialorrhea in Parkinson’s Disease patients because this case has challenging points, where non-pharmacological options are the first line of choice, so it is very interesting to be used as a case-report. Thank God we went through all the stages well so that we managed to enter the top three after competing with 24 participants from various countries,” said drg. Sutrania.

She added that the preparation for participating in this competition was discussing with the supervisors, namely drg. Anandina Irmagita Soegyanto, Sp.PM(K) and drg. Ambar Kusuma Astuti, Sp.PM(K). Then, they did a presentation simulation exercise in English and read more journals and references related to the cases that will be brought by the participants. During the competition, drg. Sutrania admitted that the challenges were technical obstacles in the form of internet connections, event times that followed ICDOH’s local time, and the large number of competitors from within and outside the country.

In the same category, drg. Erni Saleh won third place thanks to a case management report entitled “Oral UIcers Due To High Dose Mycophenolate Mofetil Use In a Kidney Transplant Recipient”. This success cannot be separated from the role of the supervisors, namely, DR. drg. Febrina Rahmayanti Sp.PM(K), drg. Felicia Paramita Sp.PM., and DR. drg Endah Ayu Tri Wulandari Sp.PM(K). “Through this international competition, I have gained valuable experience where many of the best cases are presented in this forum which will later be useful during daily practice,” said drg. Erni.

Dean of FD UI, Dr. drg. Nia Ayu Ismaniati, MDSc., Sp.Ort(K) said this victory is a pride for FD UI because it is able to contribute to improving academic reputation and can be a motivation for other students to play an active role in honing themselves and testing skills in international events.
“Hopefully the ideas and ideas contained in this scientific work can continue to be developed as a concrete manifestation in advancing Dentistry, especially Oral Disease science. In addition, I would also like to thank the supervisors and all parties involved in preparing for this competition.”

Meanwhile, the Head of FD UI’s Department of Oral Medicine, Dr. drg. Febrina Rahmayanti, Sp.PM(K)., is also proud of the achievements that have been achieved. She said this victory proves the ability and existence of FD UI students to be able to compete at the international level. By bringing a structured and tested scientific analysis, it is hoped that it will be able to contribute to each case that is the subject of discussion.
