“Hopefully this book can open the horizons of students studying translation, and the general public who are interested in translation, that translating one type of text to another is not the same,” said Haru Deliana Dewi, Ph.D. – the only Ph.D graduate in the field of Translation Studies in Indonesia at this time, about his book with the Department of Linguistics, Faculty of Humanity Universitas Indonesia (FIB UI), published by Publisher Manggu, Bandung, West Java.
According to Haru, a lecturer in the English Study Program, the book “Basic Translation Practice: Translating Several Types of Texts” is a continuation of the textbook “Basics of General Translating (DDPU)” and for the Translating Practicum class which is mandatory for English Study Program students. Head of the Department of Linguistics Faculty of Humanity Universitas Indonesia, Dr. Sonya Suganda, welcomed the publication of this book and said, “This book entitled Basic Translating Practice was born from the writer’s concern that there is no clear distinction between teaching translation in undergraduate and graduate programs. Now that concern has been resolved. By presenting examples of the translation of various texts, this book is very important to have, both by practitioners and by translation teachers.”
On a different occasion, the Director of Narrators, Indonesian language observer, and senior translator, Ivan Lanin, stated that, “This book is different from other translation books because it combines theory and practice very well. This integration is presented with a brief description of the theory and analysis of methods, ideologies, and procedures for eight types of texts commonly found in the translation industry. Therefore, this book can be used by both teachers, students, and practitioners.”
Faculty of Humanity Universitas Indonesia Chinese Study Program Lecturer Dilah Kencono felt that this book was very helpful because it contained not only theory, but also general text exercises. “Each chapter is equipped with an explanation of the theory, method, ideology, and procedure of translation, accompanied by examples of translated texts,” said Dilah. In addition, Wenang Ndaru Utami, a translator at a law firm who recently graduated as a sworn translator in January 2022, shares the same opinion that this book is a bridge for translators who want to understand translation theory and practice general texts. “The approach is easy to understand and the training is fun. The examples discussed are varied and add insight,” Wenang said in his testimony.
This book is the first in Indonesia, maybe also in the world, because it has never been written before. Books on translation are more like the DPPU (The Basic of General Translation) book which discusses the basic theory of translation. Therefore, this book is expected to be a model for academics in the field of translation to continue conducting research on the translation of various types of texts and media and publish their work. For translation practitioners, this book can be a knowledge base for them to better understand the differences in translating several types of texts.
