Course Description
Oral and maxillofacial surgery is surgical techniques performed on the mouth (oral) and maxillofacial region (jaw, neck, and face), either for aesthetic or medical purposes or both. Although recognized as a branch of medicine study, this area of study is considered a specialty in dentistry in the United States and other countries such as Australia and Canada.
Specialists who perform this kind of surgery is called an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Training for this medical profession begins with four years of undergraduate study program, followed by four years in dentistry or medical science program. After graduation, they continue their training by becoming co-assistant in a hospital or dental clinic, which can last a maximum of five years. Then, the graduates can get certification by passing an examination.
