Universitas Indonesia (UI) received an award from Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) for the title of QS Recognition for Engagement in the 2022 QS EduData Summit (EDS) nomination. This award was received by Vishnu Juwono, Ph.D., Head of the UI Transformation, Risk Management, and Monitoring Evaluation Bureau, representing UI in the 7th edition of the EDS Certificates of Recognition ceremony at the United Nations Headquarters, New York (08/06).

Eleven universities received QS Recognition for Engagement awards at QS EDS 2022. Besides UI, there were also The University of Auckland (New Zealand), Cebu Technological University (Philippines), Istanbul Technical University (Turkey), Macquarie University (Australia), Tashkent State University of Economics (Uzbekistan), Applied Science Private University (Jordan), Budapest University of Technology and Economics (Hungary), O. M. Beketov National University of Urban Economy (Ukraine), Mahasarakham University (Thailand), and American University of Beirut (Lebanon). This award recognizes the excellence of higher education at 26 universities worldwide in five categories, namely graduate employability, most improved university, QS engagement, internationalization, and Welcome to the World (a new entry in the QS World University Rankings 2023).

Director of Communications QS, Simona Bizzozero, said, “This category assesses the commitment of universities where ranking involves a large amount of data collection, and universities play an important role in this. Every year, thousands of universities spend time providing us with accurate and timely data. However, some universities do everything – provide each data point, match the QS definition, and send all the data before the deadline. QS would like to thank these universities for their involvement and provision of data.”

UI Chancellor Prof. Ari Kuncoro, S.E., M.A., Ph.D., said, “As the only university in Indonesia to receive this award, of course we are very grateful. On the other hand, this award is an encouragement for us to push ourselves to be even better on a global level.”

The EDS program focuses on ‘Sustainable and inclusive lifelong learning through Edu Data’ and includes panels focusing on how data contributes to equal access to education and encourages lifelong learning; how to leverage university data to attract and retain more international students; how to track the changing demands and needs of employers and employees, and adapt the university’s strategy accordingly; how government policies direct resources to specific sectors, and how to utilize these resources.

At the same time, QS also launched the 2023 edition of the analysis of the world’s most popular comparative universities, the QS World University Rankings. As a result, UI rose 42 ranks from position 290 last year. This year UI is included in the top 250 of the best universities in the world, ranking 248. The announcement of the QS World University Ranking can be accessed on the page https://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/world-university-rankings/2023.

QS conducts its ranking assessment based on eight indicators, namely: Academic Reputation, Employer Reputation, Faculty Student Ratio, Citations per Faculty, International Faculty Ratio, International Student Ratio, Employment Outcomes, and International Research Network. UI’s achievement was achieved thanks to the highest score in the Employer Reputation and International Faculty Ratio assessments. According to the QS release, in terms of Employer Reputation, UI achieved a score of 62.4, ranking 120 for that category (up 46 places from position 166 last year). UI scores on the indicators of International Students Ratio, International Faculty Ratio, Employer Reputation, and International Research Network are the most superior in Indonesia.

In this highly competitive landscape, the record-breaking performance achieved by Indonesian higher education is worthy of appreciation. With students increasingly demanding personalized learning experiences, the trend of increasing teaching capacity in Indonesia is promising.

At the Southeast Asian level, UI is ranked 11th out of 64 institutions, above Mahidol University (Thailand), Taylor’s University (Malaysia), University of the Philippines (Philippines), and other institutions. There are three superior indicators of UI in Southeast Asia, namely the International Faculty Ratio which is in 7th position in Southeast Asia, Employer Reputation in 7th position, and Academic Reputation in 9th position.

The QS World University Ranking provides a comparative analysis of the performance of the world’s top 1500 universities which can be found in 100 locations. QS Quacquarelli Symonds is the world’s leading provider of services, analytics and insights for the global higher education sector.
