The Board of Professors (DGB) of Universitas Indonesia (UI) held a webinar entitled “Using Generative AI for the Three Principles of Higher Education at the University of Indonesia”, last Saturday (9/12) to provide education regarding the rules for using AI in the education sector. Chairman of DGB UI, Prof. Harkristuti Harkrisnowo S.H., M.H., Ph.D., believes that this education is important because AI technology on the one hand has positive potential for academic activities, but on the other hand we need to be careful as well.

“Generative AI is an extraordinary tool that presents many opportunities to improve learning, research and other academic activities. However, like other advanced technologies, this technology must have careful consideration and responsible application, and not violate ethical values,” said Prof. Harkristuti.

To review the potential and challenges of using generative artificial intelligence or Generative AI in various scientific perspectives, UI presented three speakers, namely Professor at the Faculty of Computer Science, Prof. Dr. Eng. Wisnu Jatmiko; Professor at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Prof. Dr. Sudarsono Hardjosoekarto; and Professor at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Prof. Dr. Budi Haryanto. The three of them discussed Generative AI from the perspectives of science-technology, social-humanities, and health, as well as the limitations of its use.

According to Prof. Wisnu, AI which was initially able to predict, classify, and group data, has now developed into Generative AI which can produce new content at the same level as existing content. In the world of education, AI technology can make it easier to summarize text/writing, help translate languages, and provide answers even though they must be verified with valid data.

“The use of AI needs to be considered because it can eliminate some of the essence of education. It cannot be denied that humans cannot abandon technology because they live with technology. However, humans must also be able to manage the use of technology well,” said Prof. Wisnu.

In the social and humanities field, the use of AI has limitations because it has not surpassed human wisdom in making value-based decisions. Prof. Sudarsono said that the use of AI has negative potential, such as the deviation from the use of fake digital images in public communications. Therefore, the rules for implementing generative AI in UI must be based on the UI code of ethics and code of behavior.

Meanwhile, from a health perspective, Prof. Budi sees that Generative AI can be used in creating health service applications, such as assistance for telemedicine, medical records, translation of medical terms, disease surveillance, clinical trial recruitment, disease symptom detection, patient triage, and monitoring patient conditions online. “The use of Generative AI in patient medical consultations must be done with caution. If the diagnosis given with this technology is excessive or incomplete, it will be dangerous in treating serious illnesses, such as heart attacks or cancer,” said Prof. Budi.

It is hoped that the generative limitations of AI will provide awareness for users to be wiser in controlling and utilizing it. Coordinator of the DGB UI Academic Life and Moral Integrity Development Committee, Prof. Dr. Ir. Riri Fitri Sari, said, “Many of us are using AI tools to help and implement various efforts to improve the quality of Indonesia’s human resources. One way to measure the quality of the young generation is their ability and competitive spirit. The challenge now is that while they are trying to improve their abilities, at the same time there are shortcuts provided by Generative AI,” said Prof. Riri.
