In order to realize an entrepreneurial university, Universitas Indonesia (UI) in collaboration with Daewoong Foundation (DF), inaugurated the UI-DF Bioanalytical Laboratory which is equipped with various advanced instruments that can support biological, chemical, and other complementary analyses in the fields of health, pharmaceuticals, biopharmaceuticals, and biotechnology. UI Rector, Prof. Ari Kuncoro, SE, MA, Ph.D., said in his opening remarks that the collaboration between UI and Daewoong Group reflects UI’s commitment to always strive to be an excellent academic institution and a significant contributor to global technological development through research and innovation, especially in pharmaceutical and health products.

The establishment of the UI-DF Bioanalytical Laboratory is also a form of UI’s commitment to transform from a “research university” to an “entrepreneurial university“. The inauguration ceremony was held at Balai Sidang, UI Campus, Depok, on Tuesday (16/08).

“Historically, our partnership with Daewoong Group began in 2013 with scholarships and educational programs for many outstanding UI students. Over the years, we have successfully developed our partnership by promoting various research activities, where in 2019, UI and Daewoong agreed to build a new research facility called UI-DF Bioanalytical Laboratory located on the 4th floor of the ILRC Building of Universitas Indonesia,” said Prof. Ari.

Furthermore, Prof Ari said, despite the pandemic conditions, the construction could be completed at the end of last year so that this inauguration event marked the start of the operation of the UI-DF Bioanalytical Laboratory as well as a means of socializing laboratory facilities and opportunities for inter-agency and external cooperation both from the government and the private sector to encourage strong research collaboration for the advancement of Indonesia’s health services and biopharmaceutical industry.

The laboratory, which was built by applying GLP (Good Laboratory Practice) standards, is located on the 4th floor, ILRC UI building with an area of 336 m2. The lab was built with a donation from Daewoong Foundation of USD3,000,000 (Three Million US Dollars). The UI-DF Bioanalytical Laboratory is expected to become part of UI’s Science Techno Park (STP), which will begin construction this year.

Director of Daewoong Pharmaceutical Company Indonesia, Chang Woo Suh, Ph.D., said that Daewoong Foundation was established with the aim to contribute to the improvement of people’s health quality status and medical capacity globally. Based on these two objectives, the human resource development aspect is the main focus underlying the development programs organized by DF. For this reason, DF always strives to contribute to the advancement of health services and the Indonesian biopharmaceutical industry by collaborating with UI through the construction of the UI-DF Bioanalytical Laboratory.

In the inauguration ceremony also present as speakers were Plt. Deputy for Control of Drugs, Narcotics, Psychotropics, Precursors and Addictive Substances, Food and Drug Supervisory Agency, Dra. Togi Junice Hutadjulu, Apt., MHA., Director of Institutions, Directorate General of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Dr. Lukman, S.T., M.Hum., and Director General of Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices, Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, Dr. Dra. Lucia Rizka Andalucia, Apt, M. Pharm, MARS.

The signing of this cooperation was carried out by the Vice Rector for Research and Innovation, drg. Nurtami, Ph.D., Sp.OF(K), representing UI, and Director of Daewoong Pharmaceutical Company Indonesia, Chang Woo Suh, Ph.D. The event was attended by representatives of the Board of Trustees, Chair of the Academic Senate, Vice Chancellors, University Secretaries, Directors, Chair of the UI Halal Center and Faculty Deans.

The event continued with a ribbon cutting session as a sign of the inauguration of the UIDF Bioanalytical Laboratory starting operations. After that, the invited guests were invited to tour around to see firsthand the tools and facilities offered by the UI-DF Laboratory.
