In a bid to strengthen ties of collaboration between Universitas Indonesia (UI) and global partner universities, and give students worldwide a chance towards achieving high-quality education, UI opens its doors to students around the world through two international scholarship programmes: UI GREAT (UI Degree Scholarship for International Student) and UI SHINE (UI Scholarship for International Student Exchange). This gesture of international collaboration aims to increase UI’s academic reputation and to make the university and Indonesia known throughout the world.
“UI realises that Indonesia has seen significant growth, especially in the economic sector. As a matter of fact, this year UI has been given the chance to host the G20 Summit. UI GREAT and UI SHINE are expected to increase international collaboration and UI’s reputation worldwide,” stated the Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Abdul Haris in a campaign announcing UI GREAT and UI SHINE towards society at large.
“UI has become included among top universities, possessing the best quality in education throughout Indonesia and consistenty occupying an average rank of 56 throughout Asia and 260 throughout the world, according to QS World Campus Ranking. This is proof that UI prioritises quality of education and possesses competitive worth in various aspects. UI understands that quality higher education is needed to net in the best talents from various countries [throughout the world],” he stated in the campaign held virtually through Zoom, on Thursday (28/04). Many important functionaries from Universitas Indonesia were present, including the University Secretary, dr. Agustin Kusumayati, M.Sc., Ph.D.; the Director of Student Affairs, Dr. Badrul Munir, ST., M.Eng.; the Head of International Office UI, drg. Baiduri Widanarko, M.KKK, Ph.D.; the Head of the Bureau of Public Relations, Amelita Lusia MSi., and representatives of UI’s partner universities.
UI GREAT is intended for students from outside Indonesia who desire to attend full-time programmes and courses in UI’s campuses. Almost every faculty in Universitas Indonesia provides postgraduate programmes that aspiring students may choose from. Among the faculties offering postgraduate programmes are the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Humanities, the School of Environmental Sciences, and the School of Strategic and Global Policies.
The requirements for admission into UI GREAT, as drg. Baiduri has explained, are as follows: Applicants must be foreign (non-Indonesian) nationals, have obtained at least two shots of Covid-19 vaccines, and are capable of reaching a Cumulative Performance Index (IPK) of at least 3,0 during their tenure at UI. Students from outside Indonesia accepted into UI GREAT will be given the chance to apply for scholarship support covering, in whole or in part, student visa costs, airplane tickets, living costs, and other benefits that are listed on related pages.
UI SHINE, on the other hand, is a student exchange programme for undergraduate and postgraduate students of universities that are partnered with UI. They may go through with their studies in Universitas Indonesia for one semester. Applicants may choose any programme in any faculty that matches with the field of study they are taking in their respective universities of origin. Applicants for UI SHINE must be foreign (non-Indonesian) nationals coming from UI partner universities. Application for both programmes close on 31 May 2022 and shall be announced on 20 June 2022. dr. Agustin stated that as an institution of higher education, UI is committed to provide access to education for the younger generation. “It is for this reason that we launch the scholarship programmes UI GREAT and UI SHINE. This programme supports 250 talented foreign students from various countries that they may, through international collaboration, go through with their studies in UI,” stated dr. Agustin.
UI GREAT and UI SHINE are programmes carried out under the aegis of Academic and Student Affairs Universitas Indonesia, with full and unreserved support from the Directorate of Student Affairs, the Office for Student Admission, and International Office UI. The aforementioned three units are given the task of supporting UI’s internationalisation mission and handling international mobility programmes involving UI’s academic community and the global academic community. They help students from outside Indonesia with their academic needs while studying in UI and build bridges between UI’s academic community with that of other universities throughout the world..
