UI Receives Royalties from Bartec Utama Mandiri for the Successful Development of the Covent-20 Ventilator

Universitas Indonesia > News > News Highlights > UI Receives Royalties from Bartec Utama Mandiri for the Successful Development of the Covent-20 Ventilator

Universitas Indonesia (UI) received royalties from CV Bartec Utama Mandiri – the manufacturer of Wastewater Treatment Plants (IPAL), Modular Operating Theater Systems (OTEM), and Medical Devices – for the sales of the COVENT-20 Ventilator. At the COVENT-20 Ventilator royalty submission procession which was held at the UI Depok Convention Center, Tuesday (07/06), the total royalties submitted reached hundreds of millions of rupiah in the first 3 months of sale.

This medical device innovation product from UI researchers is a collaboration between the Faculty of Engineering (FT) UI, Faculty of Medicine (FK) UI, with funding support from the Research and Innovation Sector through the Directorate of Innovation and Science Techno Park (DISTP) UI, which has competitive prices in the market. with good quality.

Previously, UI invested Rp 446,475,000.00 for the development of the COVENT-20 Ventilator. This ventilator can already be ordered through an online shopping application managed by the government or the Electronic Catalog of the Government Goods/Services Procurement Policy Institute (E-Catalog LKPP). As of June 1, 2022, sales of the COVENT-20 Ventilator have reached 49 units. For this achievement, Universitas Indonesia (UI) is committed to encouraging researchers, especially UI academics, to produce domestic innovation products with the best prices and quality.

At the COVENT-20 Ventilator royalty handover ceremony, the Deputy Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, dr. Dante Saksono Harbuwono, Sp.PD-KEMD, Ph.D.; Vice Chancellor for Research, drg. Nurtami, Ph.D.; UI Vice Chancellor for Human Resources and Assets, Prof. Dr. Ir. Dedi Priadi, DEA; Chair of the UI Academic Senate, Prof. Nachrowi Djalal Nachrowi, M.Sc., M.Phil., Ph.D.; The Dean of the UI Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Ari Fahrial Syam, SpPD-KGEH., MMB; The Dean of the UI Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, ST., M.Eng., IPU; Director of DISTP UI, Ahmad Gamal, S.Ars., M.Sc., MUP., Ph.D.; IMERI FKUI Director, Prof. dr. Badriul Hegar, Ph.D., Sp.A(K); Deputy Director of IMERI FKUI for Research and Innovation Prof. Dr. dr. Budi Wiweko, SpOG(K), MPH; Director of the Research Center for Biomedical Engineering (RCBE) Yudan Whulanza, S.T., M.Sc.; as well as other leadership ranks in the Universitas Indonesia environment.

The COVENT-20 Ventilator Innovation is a technological breakthrough effort to answer the challenges faced by the community at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. Universitas Indonesia (UI) encourages relevant stakeholdersto develop innovative products to address the problem of the need for medical devices, especially ventilators, whose needs increase significantly during a critical pandemic situation. As a form of commitment to overcoming COVID-19, UI created the COVENT-20 Ventilator innovation product. “We at DISTP are tasked with turning the challenges of a pandemic into opportunities. We are trying to identify the need for strategic medical devices and start a long journey to distribute the research results of researchers,” said Gamal in his speech.

Universitas Indonesia (UI) has the power to synergize industrial science and technology with good quality human resources. Based on the 2020–2024 UI Strategic Plan, UI takes on the role of an entrepreneurial university to answer various global challenges and various national problems. “COVENT-20 products, apart from being commercialized, are also distributed through a donation scheme of 300 units and have been distributed to more than 180 COVID-19 referral hospitals throughout Indonesia,” said drg. Nurtami.

At the beginning of the pandemic, Indonesia experienced difficulties, mainly due to a shortage of medicines, detection equipment, personal protective equipment (PPE), and other medical equipment. According to dr. Dante, the main issue during the beginning of the pandemic was that the country’s capacity to produce raw materials into ready-to-use materials was still lacking. Therefore, health resilience and independence for health products are important to do. “I invite academics throughout Indonesia to make innovations to improve health resilience. One of the proofs of this innovation is that the innovation items from domestic children included in the LKPP E-Catalog have reached 34.7% and continue to grow, “said dr. Dante.

As the representative of the COVENT-20 Inventor Team, Dr. Basari, S.T., M.Eng., explained that COVENT-20 is a product innovation that is widely distributed to assist health workers in carrying out medical procedures.

The COVENT-20 inventor team has been conducting research since March 2020. They have developed an emergency transport ventilator that has competency standards for medical devices in Indonesia. The ventilator selected is a Pneumatic System Based Low Cost Local Transport ventilator.

“The problem in Indonesia is that patients need ventilators that support the respiratory system from home to referral health facilities. The COVENT-20 ventilator can accommodate this,” said Dr. Basari, closing his speech.

The royalty handover ceremony was followed by a webinar on emergency ventilators in Indonesia with resource persons: Head of the COVENT-20 Inventor Team, Dr. Basari, S.T., M.Eng.; CEO of CV Bartec Utama Mandiri, Hadi Tanoto, S.T.; Chairman of the Indonesian Association of Anesthesiology and Intensive Therapy Specialists, Prof. DR. Dr. Syafri K. Arif, SpAn, KIC, KAKV; and Chairman of the Indonesian Association of Emergency Doctors, dr. Bobi Prabowo, Sp.Em, KEC. The discussion discussed the COVENT-20 Ventilator process from creation to commercialization, as well as collaborations that can be developed between universities, industry, and government in the development of innovative products.
