Universitas Indonesia > News > UI Remains the Best in Indonesia QS WUR Version by Subjects 2024 for the Broad Subject and Narrow Subject Categories

Universitas Indonesia (UI) again occupied the leading position for three of the five broad subject areas released by the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings (WUR) by Subjects. The three broad subjects are Arts & Humanities, Social Sciences & Management, and Life Sciences & Medicine. These three broad subjects received good rankings at Southeast Asia and the world level, namely Arts & Humanities (6 Southeast Asia, 220 world); Social Sciences & Management (5 Southeast Asia, 151 world); and Life Sciences & Medicine (10 Southeast Asia, 349 world).

UI also experienced increased achievements in narrow subjects. Last year, UI’s 13 scientific narrow subjects were ranked 1st in Indonesia, but now this has increased to 20 narrow subjects. 20 narrow subjects are Linguistics, Architecture and Built Environment, History, Modern Languages, Performing Arts, Accounting and Finance, Geography, Anthropology, Business & Management Studies, Communication & Media Studies, Development Studies, Economics & Econometrics, Law & Legal Studies, Politics, Sociology, Computer Sciences & Information Systems, Engineering–Chemical, Engineering–Electrical & Electronic, Engineering–Mechanical, Medicine, and Physics and Astronomy.

At the Southeast Asia level, several UI narrow subjects are ranked well, namely Linguistics (4), Architecture and Built Environment (5), Theology, Divinity and Religious Studies (4), History (3), Modern Languages (5), Performing Arts (4), Accounting and Finance (5), Anthropology (3), Communication & Media Studies (4), Development Studies (3), Law & Legal Studies (4), Politics (3), and Sociology (4).

UI Chancellor, Prof. Ari Kuncoro S.E., M.A., Ph.D, said that UI’s increase in ranking in broad subjects and narrow subjects in QS WUR by Subject 2024 was a manifestation of UI’s seriousness in improving the quality of education in Indonesia. “This year, UI’s three broad subject rankings at global level increased. Arts & Humanities from 224 to 220, Social Sciences & Management from 152 to 151; and Life Sciences & Medicine from 354 to 349. This is a proud achievement. “Hopefully, this achievement can continue to be improved so UI can provide quality education at the national and global level,” he said.

The Head of the UI Transformation, Risk Management and Evaluation Monitoring (TREM) Bureau Vishnu Juwono said, “The results of QS WUR by Subjects 2024 show improvements in academic performance as well as research and publications from UI at the faculty and study program (prodi) level, not only performance at national but regional level. Where there are seven new specific subjects that reached number 1 in Indonesia. UI also continues to dominate in the broad subjects category by achieving number 1 position in 3 of the 5 broad subjects categories. Plus, the position of 13 specific subjects reached the top 5 in Southeast Asia.”

QS WUR by Subjects 2024 was attended by 1,559 institutions with 64 universities being new participants. This ranking displays 55 narrow subjects grouped into five broad subjects. There are five indicators in the ranking such as Academic Reputation, Employer Reputation, Citations per Paper, H-Index, and International Research Network (IRN).

Academic reputation is used to collect the opinions of academics around the world regarding their assessment of related universities. Employer Reputation assesses an employability matrix based on the employer’s reputation. Citations per Paper are an indicator for measuring the number of publication citations and estimating the impact and quality of scientific work produced by universities. Meanwhile, the H-Index measures the stability of the impact and quality of work published by scientists. At the same time, the IRN measures efficiency in building research collaborations in each broad subject area.
