Good news from Times Higher Education (THE) World University Impact Rankings! Universitas Indonesia occupies the 18th place amongst the world’s university, the 3rd in Southeast Asia, and the 1st in Indonesia, having risen from the 85th place it held last year. Announced on 28 April 2022, THE’s annual rankings are based on an evaluation of each university’s commitment towards the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Some of the highest figures THE gave for UI are: Gender Equality (SDG 5) — 81 (2nd place out of 938 institutions), No Poverty (SDG 1) — 88.4 (5th out of 769), Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6) — 85.2 (11th out of 634), and Partnerships For The Goals (SDG 17) — 92.4 (75th out of 1438). THE’s rankings involve 1406 universities and 106 countries in the world.

These remarkable scores in some of the UN’s SDGs demonstrate the wide-reaching impact of UI’s Tridharma (Education, Research, Community Service) towards the social and economic development and well-being of our nation. Besides the 17 SDGs set by the UN, THE uses carefully calibrated indicators to provide comprehensive and balanced comparison across four broad areas: research, stewardship, outreach and teaching.

The Rector, Prof. Ari Kuncoro, S.E, M.A, Ph.D, stated, “These achievements show that UI is increasingly recognised by the global society. Contributions shown by instructors, researchers, academic staff, and students are demonstrated with these exceptional results. UI’s collaboration with industries, the government, and the community has also contributed to UI’s rise and its [positive] influence towards the nation.”

THE’s ranking sees UI in the fifth place in Asia, beating Kyoto University (Japan), Fudan University (China), and Yonsei University (Korea), while occcupying the third place in Southeast Asia (out of 125 institutions), besting Chiang Mai University (Thailand) and Asian Institute of Technology (Thailand).

THE’s rankings also serve as a prove of how a university may support the government in their common progress towards the SDGs and, by doing so, encourage its students, instructors, and staff alike to contribute work and innovation towards the academic community with vigour.
