“Prof. Dr. Soemantri Brodjonegoro’s Help to contribute his energy, and ideas in the early days of the establishment of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the Universitas Indonesia (FMIPA UI), we feel the need to honor him. As the saying goes, a great nation is a nation that honors its heroes,” said Dean of FMIPA UI, Dede Djuhana, Ph.D., in his speech at the inauguration of Hall B.101. Building B became Prof. Dr. Soemantri Brodjonegoro Hall, on Tuesday (27/09).
The inauguration was carried out by signing an inscription by the Dean of FMIPA UI, Dede Djuhana, Ph.D., together with Prof. Dr. Soemantri Brodjonegoro’s son, Prof. Bambang Permadi Soemantri Brodjonegoro, S.E., MUP, Ph.D., and witnessed by the leadership and academic community of FMIPA UI.
Prof. Dr. Soemantri Brodjonegoro Hall, which has an area of 342 M2 and a capacity of 300 people, is a room that is used for meeting activities and lecture rooms for the academic community of FMIPA UI.
Officially bearing his father’s big name, Prof. Bambang expressed his hope that this hall could bring a new spirit to the academic community in carrying out learning activities at FMIPA UI.
Prof. Dr. Soemantri Brodjonegoro was the second Dean of FMIPA UI, which at that time was still called FIPIA UI. He had served as Dean of FMIPA UI in the period 1964-1968 and the 7th Rector of UI, whose term was later extended until 1973.
In addition, Prof. Dr. Soemantri Brodjonegoro also served as Minister of Mining and Energy of the Republic of Indonesia in 1967-1973 and Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia in 1973.
His passion for serving the country is passed down to his son, Prof. Bambang, who is a UI alumnus, has also served several times as a minister in the government, including the 8th Indonesian Deputy Minister of Finance, 29th Indonesian Minister of Finance, 15th Indonesian Minister of National Development Planning, and 13th Indonesian Minister of Research and Technology.
The decision to change the name of hall B.101 of building B FMIPA UI was stated in the Decree of the Dean of FMIPA UI Number: 2309/SK/F3.D/UI/2020 signed by Dr. Rokhmatuloh, M.Eng., as the Acting Dean of FMIPA UI at that time, right on the 60th anniversary of FMIPA UI, December 21, 2020.
