Universitas Indonesia Received Two Awards from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights After Successfully Recording 1,155 Innovations

Universitas Indonesia (UI) received two awards from the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI), Ministry of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenkumham RI). The two categories are “Higher Education with the Number of Applications for the Registration of Works” and “Higher Education with the Highest Number of Top 10 Patent Applications in Indonesia in 2022”. This appreciation was achieved because UI managed to record 1,155 intellectual property lists consisting of 1,098 Copyrights, 42 Registered National Patents, 1 Registered International Patent, 7 Granted Patents, 1 Brand, and 6 Industrial Designs throughout 2022.

UI products that have been successfully registered for copyright are in the form of books, manuals or instructions, journals, scientific works, modules, written works, video recording works, and computer programs. For patents, a total of 42 National Patents include 18 ordinary patents and 24 simple patents; 1 International Patent is related to energy; and 7 Granted Patents are innovations in the fields of engineering, health, energy, cosmetics, and transportation. In addition, UI also registered 1 MSME brand, as well as 6 industrial designs in the energy and engineering fields. This number continues to grow because most intellectual property registrations generally occur at the end of the year.

In a series of Roving Intellectual Property Seminar activity that took place last Monday (21/11), the Minister of Law and Human Rights Yasonna H. Laoly stated that the creation and innovation industry is currently developing so rapidly, following the industrial technology that enters 5.0 era. For this reason, he invited all elements of society to develop a creative economic sector based on intellectual property (IP). “Regional governments, universities, and stakeholders are expected to help socialize the importance of IP protection to the public,” said Yasonna at the Birawa Assembly Hall–Hotel Bidakara, Jakarta.

The Ministry of Law and Human Rights through the DJKI will make a policy of reducing the time for IP applications by launching Automatic Brand Renewal Approval (POP Brands) so that the creations of Indonesian people are more appreciated and have a high selling value. In supporting the progress of products for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), protection of works and innovations can be carried out through the protection of IP, be it copyrights, brands, patents, industrial designs, geographical indications, as well as IP that is communal.

Separately, Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation drg. Nurtami, Ph.D., Sp,OF(K) expressed her appreciation for this award. “I hope that UI can maintain this achievement by increasing the patents, creations, and other intellectual property from UI researchers so that the innovations can have a positive impact on society,” said drg. Nurtami.

This achievement made by UI is the proof that UI plays an active role in efforts to spur the growth of IP creativity and innovation in the context of national economic recovery. UI products listed meet the criteria of originality, are new, contain an inventive step, are applicable in the industry, and can serve as a mark of distinction. “New” means that UI inventions are different from existing technologies. UI products also contain inventive steps that are novel to someone who has expertise in a particular field and can be produced and used in a wide variety of industries.

Director of Innovation and Science Techno Park UI Ahmad Gamal, S.Ars., M.Sc., M.U.P., Ph.D. said that this achievement was due to improvements in all lines of innovation management, from the upstream and downstream sides. “In the upstream side, we monitor every research to ensure adequate intellectual property achievements while in the downstream side, the intellectual property registration process and commercial negotiations with industrial partners are facilitated better,” said Gamal.
