The Makara Tech team consisting of three students from the Faculty of Computer Science, University of Indonesia (Fasilkom UI) became the finalists of the competition organized by Microsoft, thanks to an application design called VirtuoStroke. In the Imagine Cup 2022 technology competition, VirtuoStroke led Shafira Ayu Maharani, Zafira Binta, and Muhammad Danial Yusra (student of Fasilkom UI, who continued their studies at the Tokyo Institute of Technology/Tokyo Tech) to become world finalists and made it into the top 16 for Asia region. The Imagine Cup, known as the “Technology Olympiad”, is one of the most prestigious competitions in the world in the fields of technology and software design.

Shafira, representing the Makara Tech team, said, “The VirtuoStroke innovation stems from the many obstacles faced in handling stroke, especially in developing countries such as Indonesia. Some of the obstacles faced in strokerehabilitation include expensive medical costs, lack of accessibility, lack of patient’s motivation, and fear due to COVID-19.”

To solve this problem, the Makara Tech team proposed VirtuoStroke as a smartphone-based application that brings strokerehabilitation from the hospital into a more affordable and accessible solution from home. This VirtuoStroke application provides three main features that can help every patient get a good strokerehabilitation plan, the first is games that can train movement (motion controlled games) In the second feature, the application provides data that can track the progress of rehabilitation, and the third feature makes it easy for patients to consult with doctors remotely.

The Imagine Cup was held with the aim of enabling talented students from all over the world to apply their imaginations. In addition, so that they have the space to demonstrate innovative technological solutions created to answer the world’s greatest challenges.

Dean of Faculty of Computer Science Universitas Indonesia, Dr. Petrus Mursanto, expressed his gratitude and appreciation for the international achievements achieved by the students and their supervisors. The Makara Tech team is guided by a team of mentors, consists of lecturers and researchers in the field of software engineering and information technology Faculty of Computer Science Universitas Indonesia, Betty Purwandari, Ph.D., and a specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation who is also an alumni of the Faculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia medical rehabilitation study program, dr. Rifqi Averrouza Hasbiandra, Sp.KFR,.

“Congratulations on the achievements that have been achieved, continue to be creative in producing innovative works like this VirtuoStroke. The main goal is to create products that are beneficial to the wider range of community. That the product became the finalist in the competition is a form of appreciation. Keep working for the more impactful effects for the community,” said Dr. Peter Mursanto.

As the 2022 Imagine Cup World Finalists, the Makara Tech team presented their design applications to a jury and was judged based on the use of technology and innovation, accessibility and inclusion, and marketability as a business idea. Of the tens of thousands of students representing more than 160 countries who registered for the Imagine Cup 2022 competition, 48 teams advanced to the world finals.

The finalists had the opportunity to showcase their original technological innovations to the judges through a 3-minute pitchand question and answer session. Each solution addresses a local or global problem in its competitive category–Earth, Education, Healthcare, or Lifestyle–and is judged on Azure technology use, accessibility and inclusion, marketability as a business idea, and potential to make an impact.
