icLave 2024: Building the Future of Legal Education

Universitas Indonesia (UI) shows its commitment as the number 1 inclusive and superior university in Indonesia by holding international events, one of which is The 6th International Conference on Law and Governance (icLave). This conference will take place on November 4-5, 2024 at the FHUI Campus, Depok, and this year coincides with the 100th anniversary of higher legal education in Indonesia.

icLave is an annual conference held since 2017 and aims to provide a forum for academics and legal practitioners to contribute ideas on the direction of Indonesian legal education and broad legal improvements. Dean of the Faculty of Law UI (FHUI), Dr. Parulian Paidi Aritonang, S.H., LL.M., MPP., said that this conference also commemorates the establishment of Rechtshoogeschool in 1924, which is now FHUI, as well as the inauguration of the President and the Indonesian government cabinet. With the theme “Re-shaping the Future of Indonesian Higher Legal Education,” this conference is expected to contribute to shaping the roadmap for higher legal education in Indonesia.

In this conference, international speakers who are experts and professors of law will share their experiences and best practices in global legal education. The speakers include Prof. Joanne van der Leun from Leiden University, Dr. Sripapha Petcharamasree from Chulalongkorn University, Dr. Jeremy Kingsley from Western Sydney University, Prof. Dr. Jeff Gidings from Monash University, and Prof. Henk Addink from Utrecht University. They will present best practices in the field of legal education, from research methods to legal clinics, which can be adapted for the development of legal education in Indonesia.

The Chief Executive of icLave 2024, Dr. Qurrata Ayuni, S.H., MCDR., added that this conference will also produce a declaration containing recommendations regarding the improvement of the legal system and higher legal education in Indonesia. The declaration will be read by the FHUI Board of Professors as the closing of the event and submitted to the government to be used as consideration in the development of the legal system and legal education in the future.
