Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of Universitas Indonesia (FKUI), Prof. Dr. dr. Ari Fahrial Syam, Sp.PD-KGEH, MMB, received the Soedjono D. Poesponegoro award from the Executive Board of the Indonesian Doctors Association (PB IDI) for high achievements in scientific writing in the field of medicine in national and international medical magazines and journals. The award was presented directly by the General Chairperson of PB IDI, Dr. dr. Mohammad Adib Khumaidi, Sp.OT at the 32nd Congress of the Indonesian Medical Association, which was held at the Lombok Raya Hotel, Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara, on February 12, 2025.
The award ceremony was also witnessed by world medical leaders, including the President of the World Medical Association (WMA), Dr. Ashok Philip; President of the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA); President of the Medical Association of Thailand; and President of the Confederation of Medical Associations in Asia and Oceania (CMAAO).
UI Rector, Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU is also proud of Prof. Ari Fahrial Syam’s achievements. “This award is an acknowledgment of Prof. Ari’s dedication and extraordinary contribution to the world of medicine, especially in scientific writing that excels and has an impact on the development of medical knowledge at the national and international levels. This award can certainly inspire the academic community and the medical profession in the country, especially since Prof. Ari also serves as Dean at FKUI,” said Prof. Heri.
As a specialist in internal medicine and gastroenterohepatology consultant at Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Prof. Ari has been involved in the academic world of FKUI since 2003 and was inaugurated as a Professor in 2018. One of his research focuses is Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), with various national and international scientific publications.
His research titled “Helicobacter Pylori Virulence Genes in the Five Largest Islands of Indonesia,” published in the Journal of Gut Pathogens (2015), as well as his involvement in the Helicobacter Genomic Consortium which resulted in a publication in the Journal of Nature (November 2024), shows significant contributions in the field of medicine. In addition, he also collaborated on research published in the Journal of Gut Pathogens (June 2021) regarding the distribution of H. pylori in ethnic groups in Indonesia.
His scientific achievements are also reflected in the Scopus database, with 140 scientific articles, 2,408 citations, and an h-index of 23, reflecting the broad impact of his research. In addition to the award from PB IDI, Prof. Ari also received an award from the World Gastroenterology Organization (WGO) in November 2024, for his contributions to the field of gastroenterology.
Currently, Prof. Ari has served as Dean of FKUI since 2021 and also in the previous period 2017-2021. In addition, he is also actively involved as President of the Indonesian Gastroenterology Association Editorial Board at Acta Medica Indonesiana (PUBMED published), Associate Editors of The Indonesian Journal of Gastroenterol, Hepatol, Digestive Endoscopy, and Editorial Board at Jurnal Makara Seri Kesehatan. This award further confirms Prof. Ari Fahrial Syam’s role as an academic and researcher who contributes to the development of medical science, both at the national and global levels.
