“Generasi Campus Roadshow” Encourages UI Students to Dare to Pursue Careers in the Creative Industry

Universitas Indonesia (UI) is committed to supporting all forms of learning that can enrich the insights of academicians both inside and outside the classroom. To that end, UI has accepted the request from Grab Indonesia and Narasi to host the “Generasi Campus Roadshow” on Tuesday (15/10) which will take place at Balairung UI, UI Depok Campus. This event aims to provide mentoring for the younger generation who are exploring interests outside of their chosen formal education. In addition, there is hope for connectedness between different generations because this is the key to the nation’s progress.

Director of Career Development and Alumni Relations UI, Ir. Ahmad Syafiq, M.Sc., Ph.D, fully supports the learning process outside the classroom held through the Generasi Campus Roadshow. According to him, learning outside the classroom supports career development for UI students who are interested in pursuing careers in the creative industry such as art and journalism. “We hope that students can take advantage of this momentum to plan their career development carefully,” said Syafiq. Specifically, he emphasized that his party is always open to establishing partnerships to facilitate the career development of UI academicians.

The warm welcome from UI was responded positively by Grab Indonesia’s Managing Director, Neneng Goenadi. In the welcoming session, Neneng guaranteed that the Generasi Campus Roadshow is the most effective out-of-class learning media for supporting career development, especially in the creative industry. Furthermore, she also introduced 3 speakers who will fill the talk show session, namely, Najwa Shihab, Nicholas Saputra, and Dee Lestari. The three were chosen as speakers because they are icons of the young generation who work in the creative industry as journalists, actors, and writers.

Despite working in the creative industry, Najwa, Nicholas, and Dee agreed that higher education is an important process in developing a career. Najwa said that lectures play a big role in determining passion in a career. According to the alumni of the Faculty of Law (FH) UI, passion does not have to be one hundred percent linear with the studies being undertaken, as long as there is the courage to realize it. In line with this view, Dee is of the opinion that passion should be something challenging to do. Not only does it challenge the dogma that exists in society, but it also becomes a means of self-development “When passion feels more challenging than before, then you are on the right path of self-development,” said Dee.

On the same occasion, Nicholas appealed to the younger generation to focus on looking at themselves when deciding on a passion for a career. Based on his personal experience, there are often views that belittle certain professions, especially when the field being pursued is not in accordance with the studies previously undertaken. The Makara Biru graduate stated that passion has nothing to do with other people’s assessments because the most important thing is that passion becomes a means of self-development to achieve the desired career level.

The experience of the speakers in the industrial world is expected to be a trigger for UI students to continue to develop themselves, even though these interests and talents are not directly related to the studies they are currently undergoing. Najwa Shihab has a legal background and is able to have a career as a reliable journalist. Dee Lestari is an international relations graduate who has succeeded in becoming a novelist. Meanwhile, Nicholas Saputra has succeeded in becoming an actor even though he previously had a Bachelor of Engineering (S.T.) degree. The experiences of the three can be an example for UI students to dare to take risks and be consistent in realizing their dreams.
