UI – Coventry University Talked about Indonesia Maritime

On Tuesday, March 7th 2017, UI and Coventry University from England held bilateral workshop for two days on March 7th to 8th with Indonesia Maritime issue at Ruang Apung, UI Depok.

In this workshop, the speakers and interviewees discussed about various theme on Indonesia Maritime.

Among of themes that was discussed were Maritime, Coastal Area Management, and Port and Maritime Economy Management.

The main speaker, Prof. Dr. Ir. Budi Sudilo Soepandji, talked about “Archipelago Insight” in his lecture.

He said that the main problem of Indonesia Maritime was focused on capital, foreign policy, and security defense issue.

In his opinion, maritime delimitation and sea utilization problem was depended on the assertiveness of law enforcement of a country.

“Surely it is associated with our navy armada capability, and how our constitution on sea works. Sovereignty on the sea becomes a crucial thing in Indonesia,” explained him.

In this workshop, UI presented several speakers, among of them was Prof. Melda Kamil (Indonesian Effort to Combat People Smuggling by Sea), Dr. Yetty Komalasari Dewi (Privatizing Ports in Indonesia), and Arie Afriansyah, S.H. (ASEAN’s Legal Efforts in Combating Regional Maritime Crimes).

Meanwhile, Coventry University presented Dr. James Malcolm (Lessons from the Indian Ocean), Dr. Lisa Otto (an Overview of Issues in the Oil Industry), and Dr. Ioannis Chapsos (Links between IUU Fishing & Human Trafficking in South East Asia).

Prof. Dr. Bambang Wibawarta, S.S., M.A., Vice Rector for Academic and Student Affairs hoped that this workshop became the first step for further cooperation between UI and Conventry University.

“This bilateral workshop needs to be improved, so besides knowledge exchange, our perspective on a topic will also be comprehensive, not narrowed,” added him.
