Catherine, student of International Relations of Faculty of Social and Political Sciences Universitas Indonesia (FISIP UI) year 2017 successfully gained achievement on an international event.
Catherine was chosen as one of the five winner on Association of Southeast Asian Nations Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) Youth Debate.
The event was held in Bangkok, Thailand on September 4th to 6th 2017 and supported by United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and Department of Foreign Affairs of US.
According to Catherine, the main factor of her winning was moral support from her family, friends and her coach.
“To be honest, I am not someone who is full of confident or has an outstanding ability. So I would like to thank all people who keep supporting me until I am successful,” said her.
She also added that at first, she was not really interested to participate in this event’s competition, due to the contest mechanism that was quite different than the usual debate contest.
“Usually, duration of debate contest is 7 minutes for each speaker, but this contest only give 3 minutes, so contestants have to cleverly manage their time so that all of the argument covered in a very short time,” explained her.
However, she decided to keep on participate on this contest because she wanted to add her experiences and connections.
Preparation that she had done for this contest was researching on related documents on human rights and various ASEAN declarations on human rights.
In her opinion, a well preparation is the most important thing in participating a competition.
Lastly, she also added the importance of creating positive surrounding that will support us to reach success.
In her point of view, a lot of people still not realize the impact of positive moral support for someone.
AICHR is a debate contest on ASEAN level that discussed various issues on human rights in Southeast Asia, such as women rights, economic growth, environmental protection and formation of ASEAN Human Rights court.
This event was also part of ASEAN 50th anniversary that is on August 8th 2017.
