UI Doctor of Criminology Studies the Risk of AI Victimization in the Industrial Era 4.0

Ferlansius Pangalila, a Criminology Doctoral Program student at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) Universitas Indonesia (UI), successfully earned a doctorate after defending a dissertation titled “Viktimisasi Artificial Intelligence di Era Revolusi Industri 4.0.”  (Artificial Intelligence Victimization in the Era of the Industrial Revolution 4.0). The Doctoral Promotion Defense occurred on Thursday, October 17, 2024, at the Juwono Sudarsono Auditorium, UI Depok Campus. In his research, Ferlansius examines the ambivalent impact of AI technology in the midst of the Industrial Revolution 4.0.

Ferlansius’ dissertation highlights the phenomenon of AI Victimization (VAI), which has so far received little attention, especially outside the context of cybercrime. He explained that VAI is the result of dynamic interactions between users and AI structures in everyday life. “The results of the analysis show that VAI is a product of a complex relationship, with factors such as dependence on AI technology, vulnerability of personal data, and obligations of AI systems that affect users,” he said.

Ferlansius provided concrete examples to support his research, including the failure of Tesla’s autopilot technology that resulted in fatalities, as well as the Cambridge Analytica scandal in the 2016 US Election. “These two cases show the serious risks of using AI without proper regulation,” he said.

In his dissertation, Ferlansius also showed how AI can contribute to social inequality. The process of automation and digitalization can increase the vulnerability of certain groups. Therefore, he emphasized the need for stricter regulations for the use of this technology. “It is important to develop ethical and responsible legal policies, as well as cross-disciplinary collaboration to address the risks posed by AI,” he added.

Ferlansius hopes that this research will be the foundation for further interdisciplinary research on AI, ethics, and its regulation, and encourage the development of safer and more responsible AI policies. “I hope this research can spark further discussion and help create better regulations in the use of AI in society,” he said.

The promotion hearing was led by the Dean of FISIP UI, Prof. Dr. Semiarto Aji Purwanto, with Prof. Adrianus Eliasta Meliala, Ph.D as the promoter, and Dr. Vinita Susanti as the co-promoter. Internal and external examiners also attended the session, who contributed to the evaluation of Ferlansius’ dissertation. Through this achievement, UI has once again demonstrated its commitment as a tolerant and best campus, which supports research that is relevant to the challenges of the times.
