Disaster Resilience Readiness Innovation for Serang

Universitas Indonesia (UI) through the Community Service Team (Pengmas) of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) introduced an innovative disaster education program called i-Share (Innovative Tsunami Hazard Education) to the community of Umbul Tanjung Village, Cinangka District, Serang Regency, Banten. This program is designed to increase community awareness and preparedness in facing tsunami disasters through creative and educational methods.

Head of the Pengmas (Community Service) Team FMIPA UI, Twin Hosea Widodo Kristyanto, M.T., explained that i-Share is part of the Creative Hazard Education (CREDO) tsunami series, which combines visual, auditory, and kinesthetic aspects in the learning process. This program is a development of the Environmental Geology and Disaster course in the Geology Study Program FMIPA UI.

“i-Share is a form of contribution from the Geology Study Program, FMIPA UI, in educating the public about the dangers of geological disasters, especially tsunamis. This program supports UI’s efforts to contribute to achieving several sustainable development goals or Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” said Twin.

The activity, which took place on September 29, 2024, was supported by the Serang Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) and the Serang Regency Education Office, so that community participation and related institutions could be maximized. The Community Service Team consisting of Twin and four FMIPA UI students demonstrated props that illustrated the mechanism of a tsunami using a container box filled with water and a replica of a beach. “The purpose of this demonstration is to show the process of a tsunami and its damaging impact on coastal areas,” said Twin.

The program is equipped with a role-playing simulation, which teaches the public how to respond to emergency situations directly. “This method makes the learning process more interesting and easier to understand. In addition, this simulation trains participants to be more prepared and confident in facing disasters,” he said.

Head of Prevention & Preparedness Division of BPBD Serang Regency, Hotman Siregar, S.STP, M.Si., assessed this innovation as an effective solution in increasing community preparedness in facing disasters. “This program proves that disaster education can be carried out in an interesting and effective way. We hope to continue to partner with related parties to build community resilience,” said Hotman.

Meanwhile, the Secretary of Umbul Tanjung Village, Oman, welcomed the presence of this program. “Serang Regency is known as a disaster-prone area, but until now there has been no special curriculum that discusses the potential for disasters. With i-Share, we hope that disaster material can become local content in our schools,” he said.

Before being implemented in Serang Regency, the i-Share program had been introduced in several schools in Depok and Jakarta since 2022. The evaluation results showed an increase in student preparedness as well as high enthusiasm for participating in disaster training.
