Halal Food and Cosmetic Innovations from Cocova and Rolic Bring Honor to UI in 2024 Sharia Competition

Two innovative startups from Universitas Indonesia (UI), Cocova and Rolic, have successfully made proud achievements by entering the top 15 of the Youth Sharia Sociopreneurship Competition (YSSC) 2024. This competition was attended by hundreds of participants and was organized by Bank Indonesia together with the Universitas Airlangga Startup and Incubation Development Agency. Cocova excels because of innovation in the halal food sector, while Rolic stands out with a halal cosmetic production based on the circular economy.

Cocova is known as a producer of healthy natural ice cream, with bioactive content such as high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and guaijaverin, which serve to prevent diabetes and high cholesterol. In addition, this ice cream uses natural stevia sweetener with 0% calories and plant-based ingredients, so the calories produced are lower than milk-based ice cream. Cocova products use guava leaves and coconut milk, which are favorite ingredients of the Indonesian people, without reducing the taste that consumers like.

Meanwhile, Rolic presents essential oils produced from rejected agricultural materials such as ginger, patchouli, nutmeg, and lemongrass, as well as agricultural waste such as clove leaves, coffee grounds, and orange peels. Currently, Rolic has 15 essential oil variants that can be used for diffusers, healing, and body massage, as well as cosmetic and pharmaceutical additives, including popular variants such as Lavender, Coffee, Lemon, and Clove.

Director of Innovation and Science Techno Park (ISTP) UI, Ahmad Gamal S.Ars., M.Si., M.U.P., Ph.D., said that the success of Cocova and Rolic at YSSC is not only recognition of their innovation, but also opens up great opportunities to collaborate with industry players, investors, and mentors in the field of sharia economics. “This achievement also strengthens UI’s position as a university that is committed to encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship in the halal economy sector,” said Ahmad.

The peak event of YSSC 2024 will last until early November and includes various activities such as exhibitions, seminars, and collaboration and networking events between business actors in the halal industry. Prasandhya Astagiri Yusuf, S.Si, M.T, Ph.D, Head of the DISTP UI Business Incubator Sub-Directorate, expressed his hope for the continued success of the two startups. “We hope that these two startups can continue to advance and win the YSSC competition. Hopefully, Cocova and Rolic will remain consistent in developing innovative products that support the growth of the sharia economy in Indonesia,” he said.
