On Wednesday, February 9th 2017, Department of International Relations of FISIP UI held public lecturer that titled “The Rise and Fall of Maritime Powers in World History: Lessons for Indonesia.”.
Attended as speaker of this public lecturer, Prof. Geoffrey Till (Emeritus Professor of Maritime Studies King’s College London).
The event was opened by speech of Dean of FISIP UI, Dr. Arie Setiabudi Soesilo, M.Sc.
In the lecturer, Prof. Geoffrey Till explained factors that caused the rise and fall of maritime power of some countries that was written in world history, that could be an important lesson for Indonesia.
Prof. Geoffrey Till also explained typical problems that is faced by navies and coastguards, such as defence inflation, budgetary limitations, resources (commitments gap), sea blindness, and land-centric culture.
He also continued his explanation related to maritime policy and strategy priority, and policy and strategy of military and navy.
The event that was held at Auditorium Juwono Sudarsono, Kampus FISIP UI, Depok were also attended by Laksda Amarulla Octavian (Dean of Faculty of Defence Management of Universitas Pertahanan), Prof. Drs. Adrianus Eliasta Meliala, M.Si., M.Sc, Ph.D. (Chairman of Board of Professor of FISIP UI), Evi Fitriani, M.A., Ph.D. (Head of MBRC FISIP UI), student of International Relations FISIP UI, student of Universitas Pertahanan, and other general public.
