The Badui Nyarita 2024 program, established by the Universitas Indonesia (UI) Student Executive Body (BEM), Faculty of Nursing (FIK), and BEM of the Faculty of Dentistry (FKG), with an accompanying lecturer from FIK, Ns. La Ode Abd. Rahman, S.Kep., MBA, is a community service program held in two locations, Ciboleger, Banten, and the National Monument (Monas), Jakarta, from June 26 to 28, 2024. This program aims to educate Badui children on the importance of maintaining health and fostering a sense of love for the country.
According to Ns. La Ode, who is also the Head of the Sub-Directorate of Community Service at the Directorate of Community Service and Empowerment (DPPM) UI, this community service program consists of two activities, health education and instilling civic values. “With the Badui Nyarita 2024 program, we hope that this can become a place for Badui children to gain new experiences and broaden their knowledge,” he said.
Health education was carried out for two days in Ciboleger, Banten, including education on Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS), as well as dental and oral health. To attract the attention of 20 participants, who are Badui children, materials were provided with interactive media. PHBS education was done through a hand puppet show and kuda bisik(whispering horse) game, while education on dental and oral health was done using teeth models.
Chief Executive of Badui Nyarita 2024, Esti Maya Windarti, stated how shows were carried out using Sundanese so the children could understand the PHBS materials easily. The presentation of materials was done at intervals along with kuda bisik games and singing together activities. For education on dental and oral health, teeth models were used to demonstrate how to brush teeth well, and the participants were then invited to practice it. This allows children to gain a deeper understanding of how to brush their teeth correctly.
On the third day, the Executive Committee of Badui Nyarita 2024 invited 19 Badui children, accompanied by three citizen representatives, to visit the National Monument (Monas). This activity aims to educate Badui children about national values and to introduce them to Indonesian history. The participants listened to fairy tales and watched dioramas depicting historical events in Indonesia, from prehistoric times to the era of independence.
The participants then headed to the Hall of Independence to see the four attributes of Indonesian independence, namely the Map of the Indonesian Archipelago, the Red-and-White Flag, the gate containing the Manuscript of the Proclamation of Indonesian Independence, and the National Emblem of Indonesia, the Garuda Pancasila. The meaning of these attributes was explained to the participants so they could gain more insights into the history of the country. Afterward, in the closing part, the Badui children were asked to sing national songs in groups, such as the “Halo-Halo Bandung,” “Hari Merdeka,” “Dari Sabang Sampai Merauke,” “Garuda Pancasila,” and “Satu Nusa Satu Bangsa.” They seemed to be motivated and enthusiastic about giving their best performance.
Rani, one of the program participants, expressed happiness at being able to take part in the Badui Nyarita 2024 activities. “We were happy to be taken on a tour, see various statues, and also taught various games. Hopefully, those who visit us will continue to be blessed with good health and can meet again on other occasions,” said Rani.
Regarding this whole series of activities, Sarpin, a village official in the Head of Government Section in Badui, said that the parents of Badui children felt elated when their children participated in the Badui Nyarita 2024 activities. “This is actually my dream, as I often talk to my son, Marno, about events like this. This is something extraordinary and can have a good impact on the knowledge of Badui children, so that their minds are opened even though they do not receive formal education,” he said. He wishes the Badui Nyarita Program could continue and involve more Badui children.
The organizer of the Badui Nyarita 2024 program received support from various UI units/institutions, including the Directorate of Community Service and Empowerment (DPPM), Research and Community Service (RPM) FKG, UI Alumni Association (ILUNI), and ILUNI FIK. This program also received assistance from partners outside of UI, including Wardah Beauty Cosmetics Indonesia.
