The Faculty of Dentistry (FKG) of Universitas Indonesia (UI) held a Community Service (pengmas) program in the form of dental health education on (30/11) in Tegalwaru District, Purwakarta, West Java. In an area of ​​50,407 square meters, Tegalwaru District, which is known as the Education Village because it is a space for integration between formal and informal education. The FKG UI community service targets a total of 804 participants.

This activity was attended by students from State Elementary School (SDN) 01 Cisarua, State Elementary School (SDN) 02 Cisarua, Junior High School (SMP) 03 Cisarua, young dentist students, Education Village volunteers, and the local community. This activity was also in collaboration with the World Conscience Foundation, chaired by Dr. Imam B. Prasodjo, lecturer at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, UI. This activity presented superior programs including oral health counseling and examinations, young dentist training, Training of Trainer (ToT) for teachers and cadres, simple dental care and treatment (extractions and fillings), distribution of fluoride varnish and Atraumatic Restoration (ATR) to students SDN and research sampling.

Dean of FKG UI, Dr. drg. Nia Ayu Ismaniati, M.D.Sc., Sp.Ort(K) was also present with the FKG UI Research and Community Service (RPM) team. “Collaboration between FKG UI and the local government can create positive synergy in health services. This is also a motivation for the FKG UI community service team to continue to be committed to providing benefits and support to the community,” said Dr. Nia. He further appreciated the enthusiasm of the residents and the support of all parties involved in this annual community service.

Secretary of Tegalwaru District, Suhaeli welcomed the ongoing program organized by FKG UI. Suhaeli said the importance of access to health services, especially for teeth and mouth, not only provides direct health benefits, but also supports understanding of the importance of dental care and oral health. “This program is very useful and provides an opportunity for students and residents to get access to health services, especially for teeth and mouth,” said Suhaeli.

Head of service team drg. Benso Sulijaya, Sp.Perio(K)., Ph.D. said that pre-clinical students, coass, and Masters students at FKG UI and the Department of Dental Public Health and Preventif Dentistry (IKGM-P) were fully involved in this community service. “This activity is a form of student empowerment through project-based outcomes (PBO) which is absorbed from the Independent Learning Campus (MBKM) concept,” said drg. Benso, who also provided information on the dangers of smoking on dental health.

The FKG UI community service team consisted of drg. Atik Ramadhani, Ph.D. and drg. Citra Fragrantia, Ph.D., supported by PT. Unilever Indonesia (Pepsodent), CT. ARSA and Mandiri Amal Insani (MAI) as the main sponsors in providing products and borrowing dental unit cars. Apart from that, seven dentist personnel from the FKG UI Alumni Association (ILUNI), five dentist personnel and dental nurses from the Indonesian Navy (LADOKGI RE Martadinata) and the Indonesian Dentists Association (PDGI) in Purwakarta Regency, Tegalwaru Community Health Center and the local Health Service worked together to make this event a success.

This community service is a FKG UI program in order to make Healthy Indonesia 2023 a success which focuses on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) point 3 Good Healthy and Well-being and point 4 Quality Education. It is hoped that this outreach activity can have a positive impact on the health and welfare of the people in the Education Village.
