Environmental problems must be addressed because they impact people’s health and welfare. Universitas Indonesia is committed to supporting the government in creating a healthy and sustainable environment. In commemoration of the 74th Anniversary, UI carried the theme Continuously Building a Sustainable Indonesia to encourage and educate the public regarding programs and policies that support environmental sustainability.

Secretary of UI, dr. Agustin Kusumayati, M.Sc., Ph.D., hopes UI’s commitment to sustainability issues can help create a sustainable Indonesia. In the 2023 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, UI is in 20th place in the world. We are also serious about maintaining the best ranking in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings. “In 2023, UI was in the highest position in Asia and 24th in the world,” said dr. Agustin in her speech at the UI’s 74th Anniversary event on Wednesday (21/2).

The 74th Anniversary previously began with an Open Session by a lecturer and scientist from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences UI, Prof. Dr. Jatna Supriatna, MSc., on Friday (2/2). He spoke about the role of universities in studying various trade-offs in land use, the use of biodiversity, the impact of climate change, and policies and management related to forests and seas.

“Besides scientific orations, the Dies Natalis activities were also enlivened by various contests and competitions related to health and environmental issues. Some of them are competitions to decorate tumpeng made from natural materials, sports competitions such as tug-of-war, table tennis, futsal, badminton, walking, and clothing design competitions made from recycled materials,” said Amelita Lusia, Head of the Public Relations and Public Information Openness Bureau ( KIP), who is the Chief Executive of UI’s 74th Anniversary this year.

UI also held competitions for mass media journalists who reported on UI’s efforts to support nature conservation. First place in the Online and Print Media category was won by Deonisia Arlinta from Kompas Daily, who wrote a news story entitled Polymer Technology to Tackle Plastic Waste. The first winner for the television category was Fachmy Febryan from CNN Indonesia, who presented the news entitled UI Engineering Faculty Installs PLTS in I-Cell Building.

Amelita said that as a form of appreciation for the efforts made by UI residents in supporting the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) targets, UI also gave awards to faculties, schools, work units, and the academic community.

Among these awards is UI GreenMetric which awarded the Faculty of Engineering (Rank 1), Faculty of Humanities (Rank 2), Faculty of Mathematics and Sciences (Rank 3), Faculty of Medicine (Rank 4), and Faculty of Psychology (Rank 5) as The 2023 Most Sustainable Faculty/School/Vocational School. Meanwhile, the Faculty of Dentistry was the faculty with the most significant progress in terms of sustainability in 2023, said Amelita.

The Dies Natalis event, which more than 1,000 people attended, was also enlivened by a performance from one of the country’s biggest bands, Ada Band, who sang a number of their popular songs, such as Because Women Want to be Understood, The Best for You, and Should I Die.
