Professor of Fasilkom UI Prof. Kasiyah Discussed the Importance of Flexibility of Various Roles in Learning Activities in the Digital Transformation Era

Prof. Dr. Dra. Kasiyah, M.Sc., was inaugurated as a Tenured Professor in the Field of Online Learning Systems for Higher Education, the Faculty of Computer Sciences, Universitas Indonesia (Fasilkom UI) at Balai Sidang, UI Depok Campus, on Wednesday (15/3). In her inaugural speech this morning, Prof. Kasiyah said, along with the development of e-Learning in Indonesia, many studies in the field of education concentrate on e-Learning studies. For this reason, scientific studies in the implementation of education are increasingly important in efforts to improve its quality.

She further conveyed that asynchronous online collaborative learning is an active and collaborative learning strategy through online meetings. Asynchronous is a learning mode carried out not simultaneously, which means that the lecturer provides materials that can be used as references, either in the form of documents or visual material such as videos, so that students can study them again at a later time. The main component is interaction, without interaction students feel isolated.

“Collaboration opens up opportunities to give feedback to each other, so it enriches perspectives. Asynchronous online collaborative learning is a positive learning environment, fostering critical thinking skills, fostering leadership and tolerance, increasing self-confidence, reducing anxiety, increasing learning outcomes, and encouraging engagement and sharing learning strategies,” said Prof. Kasiyah in presenting her research entitled “Orkestrasi Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi dalam Bingkai Pembelajaran Kolaboratif Daring Asinkron”.

Critical thinking skills are the main aspect of asynchronous online learning that has attracted the most attention. This is because the contents of the discussion are well recorded so that they can be read and traced back, meaning that the students can grasp the materials more profoundly. Furthermore, she also added, in text-based collaborative learning, lecturers can identify learning difficulties and diagnose errors in understanding concepts through discussion transcripts which are a source of data.

In addition, the teaching presence is actually the contribution of group members to keep the discussion going to achieve common goals. “Teaching presence is a shared responsibility of both lecturers and students. In it, there is also a cognitive presence, which is the operationalization of critical thinking. This is a manifestation of the process of defining the problem (triggering event), exploring ideas and information (exploration), forming meaning (integration) through analysis, synthesizing ideas, associating between concepts, and proving the correctness of solutions or applying their knowledge in new contexts (resolution),” said Prof. Kasiyah, citing the paper of Garrison, Anderson, and Archer (2000).

She also said that the opportunity strategy in realizing e-Learning studies at the UI level could be grouped into three study groups, namely, interpreting data in the Learning Management System (LMS) to improve the quality of teaching and publications; LMS enrichment innovation; and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for education.

Prof. Kasiyah added, in the era of digital transformation, learning requires flexibility in the roles of lecturers and students. “Learning strategy is an art. This is what makes studies in the field of education always interesting to discuss. Experts agree that the way lecturers teach reflects their understanding of the meaning of learning. I believe that the way we teach is a reflection of gratitude, as well as love for students and the nation,” said Prof. Kasiyah, closing her speech.

The professor inauguration procession was led directly by UI Rector Prof. Ari Kuncoro, SE, MA, Ph.D., and broadcast virtually via Universitas Indonesia and UI Teve Youtube channels. Prof. Kasiyah successfully earned her bachelor’s degree in Mathematics at Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta, in 1985. Then she continued her master’s degree in Computer Science Program, University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, Canada (1991). In 2017, she received her doctoral degree in Computer Sciences, Fasilkom UI.

In recent years, Prof. Kasiyah has actively published her work in various reputable international journals in the fields of education and information technology. Her works include Experiencing the community of inquiry framework using asynchronous online role-playing in computer-aided instruction classes. Education and Information Technologies (2022), Using the personal learning environment to support self-regulated learning strategies: a systematic literature review. Interactive Learning Environments (2022), and Designing asynchronous online discussion forum Interface and interaction based on the Community of Inquiry Framework. International Review of Research in Open and Distributed Learning (2022). Apart from that, she also actively publishes works in the form of books, one of which is entitled “Pembelajaran Jarak Jauh” which won the 2nd place award in the Best Book Selection Event given by the National Library of Indonesia, on September 10, 2021.
