Nine students from the University of Indonesia (UI) from the Hydromodelling Technology and Workshop (HTW) – an executive institution that accommodates, develops, and channels the interests and talents of members of the Faculty of Engineering (FTUI) who are interested in the maritime sector – once again make UI proud in the international stage. The students who came from the FTUI Naval Engineering study program who were members of the Nagapasa UI team won third place in theFerry Safety Design Competition.

This is an annual event organized by the Worldwide Ferry Safety Association (WFSA), the International Ferry Safety Association based in New York, USA. This year, this international competition was held for the ninth time on March 1-18 May 2022 and was participated by 12 teams from various universities around the world.

The design of the ferry that we have designed has several advantages, the hull of our ship uses a catamaran design that increase the stability of the ship. Then, the propulsion and electricity sources that we use are more environmentally friendly. Not only that, the passenger safety system on the ship that we have designed has been standardized by the rules of the International Maritime Organization (IMO),” said Iko Septiyahardi, manager of the UI Nagapasa team.

Nagapasa Team Designed a passenger ship that can sail for 20 hours from Majuli to Assam, India. This ship has a length of 34 meters and a width of 10 meters and can accommodate 150 passengers. This ferry consists of four main rooms, namely the navigation room, room for passengers, room for vehicles, and engine room. The ship’s design has also complied with the IACS Regulation and Rules Inland Waterway Shipfrom DNV-GL.

“The Nagapasa team used steel as the material for the ship’s hull and the ship’s hull was designed in the form of a slender. This form can maintain the balance of the ship. In addition, the vessel uses ultra low sulfur diesel with a sulfur content of 10 ppm (part per milion) mixed with 10% biodiesel and 10% ethanol as fuel. From this design, the Nagapasa team ferry has the advantages of low noise and vibration from the engine room, a smaller engine room, environmentally friendly, and low maintenance costs,” said Achmad Riadi, S.T., M.Eng., Ph. D., the supervisor of the UI Nagapasa team who is also a lecturer in the Factulty of Engineering UI Shipping Engineering study program.

The Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, ST., M.Eng., IPU appreciated the work and achievements of FTUI students, “Indonesia as a maritime country needs to have and develop qualified ship technology. The design of the ferry from the Nagapasa team prioritizes safety factors and a more affordable cost. Hopefully this design will become an alternative solution for ships that are environmentally friendly and safe for passengers and can be applied to the Indonesian shipping industry.”

The nine FTUI Naval Engineering students who are members of the Nagapasa UI team are Iko Septiyahardi (2018), Muhammad Fauzan Azhima (2018), Arief Kurniawan (2018), Muhammad Fadhilal Mursyid (2018), Faiz Rizqillah Akbar (2019), Christofer (2019) , Muhammad Elvan Nawawi (2020), Dwi Febrianto Wibowo (2020), and Fadillah Nurrani (2018).
