Universitas Indonesia (UI) has again been recognized as the number one ranked university in Indonesia in the fields of Engineering, Art and Humanities, and Social Sciences based on an assessment conducted by the world university ranking agency Times Higher Education (THE). THE released THE World University Rankings (WUR) by Subject 2023 for 11 fields of science, namely, Art and Humanities, Business and Economics, Education, Law, Social Sciences, Computer Science, Engineering, Clinical and Health, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Psychology through the page https://www.timeshighereducation.com/world-university-rankings/by-subject.
The results of the ranking placed UI 1st in Indonesia and 601-800th in the world in Engineering with an overall score of 26.3-31.9. In Southeast Asia, UI ranked 13th out of 60 participating institutions in Southeast Asia in Engineering. UI is the only Indonesian university to enter the top 15 in Southeast Asia, outdoing Universiti Sains Malaysia (Malaysia), ITB, Chiang Mai University (Thailand), UGM, and Universiti Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia).
When looking at the assessment indicators, UI obtained the highest score of the other 4 indicators, which is 80.6 for Industry Income. In addition, UI scores on the International Outlook and Teaching indicators are the most excellent in Indonesia compared to other universities. In Engineering, there are five disciplines/subjects, including general engineering, electrical & electronic engineering, mechanical & aerospace engineering, civil engineering, and chemical engineering. In this field of science, this year THE conducted an assessment of 1306 universities, more than the last year’s, which was 1188 universities.
In Art & Humanities, UI is the only university in Indonesia to be included in THE WUR 2023 by subject. UI ranks 401-500 in the world with an overall score of 20.0-23.6, where UI excels in Indonesia on the Industry Income indicator with a score of 100.0. This score makes UI the best in the Industry Outcome indicator in Southeast Asia with a perfect score. The Art & Humanities field includes six disciplines/subjects, including archaeology; architecture; art, performing arts & design; data science; history, philosophy & theology; and languages, literature & linguistics. The assessment table assessed 663 universities, up from 606 last year.
In the field of Social Sciences, UI is ranked first in Indonesia and 501-600 in the world. This field of science includes five disciplines/subjects, namely Communication & Media Studies, UI is ranked 1st in Indonesia; Geography, UI is ranked 1st in Indonesia; Politics & International Studies, UI is ranked 1st in Indonesia; Sociology, UI is ranked 1st in Indonesia. Meanwhile, for Data Science subject, UI is not included in the ranking table.
Meanwhile, in the field of Business and Economics for the disciplines/subjects of Accounting & Finance, Business & Management, and Economics & Econometrics, UI is ranked second in Indonesia and 501-600 in the world. Then, in the subject of Computer Sciences, UI managed to be ranked 2nd in Indonesia and ranked 601-800 in the world.
While in other subjects, which are Medicine & Dentistry, UI is ranked 3rd in Indonesia and 601-800 in the world; Other Health, UI is ranked 3rd in Indonesia and 601-800 in the world; Agriculture & Forestry, UI is ranked 6th in Indonesia and 801-1000 in the world; Biological Sciences,UI is ranked 5th in Indonesia and 801-1000 in the world; Chemistry, UI is ranked 9th in Indonesia and 1001+ in the world; Geology, Environmental, Earth & Marine Sciences, UI is ranked 8th in Indonesia and 1001+ in the world; Mathematics & Statistics, UI is ranked 9th in Indonesia and 1001+ in the world; and Physics & Astronomy, UI is ranked 9th in Indonesia and 1001+ in the world.
THE WUR by Subject 2023 uses the same 13 performance indicators as THE WUR 2023 that have been calibrated to suit each field, and have combined to score under five categories. The five indicators are Teaching: the learning environment; Research: volume, income and reputation; Citations: research influence; International outlook: staff, students and research; and Industry income: innovation. Within each subject, the methodology used is tailored to the weight of each assessment indicator.
