Universitas Indonesia (UI) through UI GreenMetric once again announced the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2021 which was conducted in a hybrid manner on Tuesday (14/12) at the UI Depok campus. Based on UI GreenMetric’s assessment, Wageningen University & Research, the Netherlands is the Most Sustainable Campus in the world. The second place is Nottingham University in the UK and the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. In Indonesia, Universitas Indonesia (UI) won the title of Best Sustainable Campus, followed by Diponegoro University and Gadjah Mada University in second and third place.

The announcement was witnessed by Plt. Director General of Higher Education, Research and Technology, Prof. Ir. Nizam, M.Sc., DIC, Ph. representing the Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology; Director General of Climate Change Control, Ir. Laksmi Dhewanthi, M.A., representing the Indonesian Minister of Environment and Forestry; UI Rector Prof. Ari Kuncoro, S.E, M.A, Ph.D.; and UI GreenMetric Chair Prof. Dr. Riri Fitri Sari, M.Sc., M.M., as well as university leaders from within and outside the country.

In his welcoming speech, Prof. Ari Kuncoro said, “This year we experienced a disruption in our normal life with the Covid-19 pandemic. For almost 2 years we have learned a lot about this pandemic and how important it is to live in a clean, healthy and sustainable environment. On the other hand, this pandemic has also given us the opportunity to reflect and redefine how we manage universities and the impact of campus activities on the environment, social, and economy of the communities around us, and in Indonesia. We have also learned that only by working together can we overcome this pandemic. I am pleased that many universities around the world and in Indonesia are enthusiastically participating in this ranking. It shows that more and more universities are taking environmental and sustainability aspects more seriously.”

“UI GreenMetric World University Rankings Network also shows that collaboration, learning, sharing, and working together nationally and globally can realize a more sustainable campus and environmental sustainability,” he said.

Like the previous year, this year UI GreenMetric also gave four awards for universities at the world and Indonesian levels. First, The 2021 Most Sustainably Improved University award was given to Tilburg University, the Netherlands (world level) and Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta (Indonesia level). Second, The 2021 Most Active National Coordinator of UI GreenMetric World University Ranking Network was awarded to Universidade de Sao Paulo, Brazil (world level) and The 2021 Most Active University in UI Greenmetric World University Rankings Network-Indonesia was awarded to Pattimura University. Third, The 2021 Most Sustainably Innovative University was awarded to National Pingtung University of Science & Technology, Taiwan (world level) and Universitas Negeri Semarang (Indonesia level). Finally, The 2021 Best New Participating University, awarded to Cairo University, Egypt (world level) and Ahmad Dahlan University (Indonesia level). UI GreenMetric is a UI innovation that has been widely recognized internationally as the first university ranking in the world based on high commitment to campus environmental management. Now, the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings are increasingly globalized and increasingly followed by universities in various countries. This year, the number of participants reached 956 universities from 80 countries around the world, up from 912 universities from 74 countries in 2020. Some of the new countries joining in 2021 are Ghana, Honduras, Hong Kong, Turkmenistan, Nigeria and Curacao. In Indonesia, there are 101 universities participating in UI GreenMetric. The UI GreenMetric 2021 assessment is based on three pillars, namely Environment, Economy, and Social with the weight of the assessment indicators consisting of Campus Conditions and Infrastructure (15%), Energy and Climate Change (21%), Waste Management (18%), Water Use (10%), Transportation (18%), and Education and Research (18%).

Furthermore, Prof. Dr. Riri Fitri Sari, M.Sc., MM. explained, “Not only ranking, UI GreenMetric also builds a strong international network. Currently, there are 32 national coordinators from 28 countries spread across Asia, Europe, and America. These national coordinators have successfully held UI GreenMetric workshops in their respective countries, bringing in a team of experts from UI to serve as resource persons and bringing an increase in UI’s reputation as a pioneer of Sustainable Campus. In addition, UI GreenMetric and the national coordinators are trying to have a good impact on future generations. UI GreenMetric has successfully initiated a one-semester online lecture on sustainability in collaboration with seven universities (Universidade de Sao Paulo, Universitas Indonesia, University of Szeged, El Bosque University, University of Sharjah, ESPOCH and University of Sousse) from four continents, supported by 31 professors and attended by 80 students from these universities in the spring semester of 2021. This online lecture is themed Global Practices of Sustainable Developments. In this regard, UI GreenMetric has shown leadership in the global sustainable campus movement.”

The pandemic also did not prevent UI GreenMetric from conducting fifteen workshops in collaboration with domestic and international universities and institutions, including Universiti Putra Malaysia (Malaysia), University of Szeged (Hungary), Mahidol University (Thailand), University of Zanjan (Iran), Tarbiat Modares University (Iran), Sebelas Maret University (Indonesia), Universidad Hemisferios (Ecuador), RUDN University (Russia), Universidad Tecnologica de Pereira (Colombia), Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon (Mexico), Inseec U (France), Multimedia Nusantara University (Indonesia), Sumatera Institute of Technology (Indonesia), UIN Sultan Aji Muhammad Idris Samarinda (Indonesia), University of Papua (Indonesia) and Telkom University (Indonesia).

In Indonesia UI GreenMetric has also held a national meeting of student leaders in sustainability in collaboration with Raden Intan Lampung State Islamic University as the host, held a national student competition in collaboration with Lampung University as the host, held training for sustainability offices in Indonesia in collaboration with Islamic University of Indonesia as the event organizer, and held training on Eco-Enzyme making in collaboration with Syiah Kuala University, UIN Sultan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi, Sam Ratulangi University and Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta as the host. In addition, Training of Trainers for campus waste management was also organized by the Solikam Team with speakers from ITS, Telkom University and Pattimura University.

As a form of collaboration for environmental solutions in addition to the Eco- Enzyme team and for waste solutions, UI GreenMetric formed a collaboration team for regulatory and infrastructure (SI) criteria known as Campus Infrastructure and Environment Team and Campus Waste Solutions (Solikam).
