In order to avoid the threat of radicalism for the academic community at Universitas Indonesia (UI), Campus Security Unit (UPT PLK) UI in synergy with Ukhuwah Islamiyah Mosque and the Student Patrol presents a Panel Discussion and Declaration of Indonesian Student Nationality. The discussion with the title “Strengthening Campus Resistance from the Threat of Clandestine Ideological Movement of Khilafatul Muslimin as an Effort to Prevent the Occurrence of National Disintegration in Indonesia”, aims to dispel various acts of disintegration, such as radicalism, extremism, and terrorism. UI is committed to strengthening and instilling the values of Pancasila, nationalism, and diversity. As a campus of integrity, inclusiveness, tolerance, humanism, and dignity, UI opposes radical groups that divide the nation, including the Khilafatul Muslimin group. According to UI Vice Rector for Academic and Student Affairs Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Abdul Haris, Khilafatul Muslimin’s goals, vision, and mission are incompatible with Indonesia’s national commitments.

“The Khilafatul Muslimin movement that promotes the ideology of the caliphate feels that it practices the most pious Islam and has an intellectual position that supports ISIS, which is certainly not in accordance with our noble national commitment because it causes unrest in the community,” said Prof. Haris in his remarks. Director of National Counter Terrorism Agency (BNPT) Brig. Gen. Pol. R. A. Nurwahid, M.M. said that during his contact with terrorist eradication activities since 1995, Brig. Gen. Nurwahid had handled terrorist cases in various parts of Indonesia.

According to him, more than 90% of terrorists are identified as Muslims. He underlined that the perpetrator was an irresponsible person for manipulating the Qur’anic verse to be used as incitement and hate speech.

“Radicalism, terrorism, and the like are great slanders that can destroy the Indonesian nation. Khilafatul Muslimin, for example, has politicized, metamorphosed, and has now spread to various regions throughout Indonesia,” said Brig. Gen. Nurwahid.

According to Dean of Faculty of Psychology UI Dr. Bagus Takwin, M. Hum. the main reason why people join disentegrated groups is reassurance. They feel they have chosen the right way of life in this world and the hereafter when they join the group. The vision, mission and goals of disentegrated groups, such as Khilafatul Muslimin, are considered to have promising certainty compared to the ideology of Pancasila. In reality, the existence of these groups is not in accordance with the values contained in the five precepts of Pancasila.

Dr. Bagus further said, when viewed from the emotional side, those who believe in the disentegration group feel happier and are helped morally and other support. In fact, no religion teaches a distorted understanding of killing fellow humans, silencing dissenting opinions, or other heinous acts.

“As someone who has awareness and understanding, it is only natural that we remind each other so that our relatives or friends who have bad influences can be dealt with immediately so as not to cause a prolonged disentegration movement. This must be done because, if the slightest bad thing is not handled, it will get worse,” said Dr. Bagus.

Threats from groups that contradict the values of Pancasila have actually existed since the time of independence. Looking at the history of 1965, Communist Party of Indonesia (PKI) or known as the G30S/PKI movement was the biggest betrayal of the Indonesian nation. The PKI is an example of a group that opposes the ideology of Pancasila.

According to Dr. Bondan Kanumoyoso, M.Hum., Dean of Faculty of Humanities UI, the PKI, which contains communism, rejected the presence of religion. This goal is not in line with the value of the first principle of Pancasila, namely Belief in the One God.

This issue, especially in this case the Khilafatul Muslimin group, must be addressed appropriately by the government and all elements of society. Movements in the name of religion but actually reject the presence of Pancasila must be dealt with quickly because they damage diversity in the country. Khilafatul Muslimin aims to replace the Pancasila ideology with Islamic ideology. Dr. Bondan said, Khilafatul who supports the ISIS movement has the intention to clash Pancasila so as to cause divisions that damage the nation’s diversity.

An alumna of Faculty of Psychology UI Arbania Fitriani said there are many organizations on campus that claim to be Islamic, but in reality deviate from its teachings. This needs attention from a number of parties, especially lecturers and rector. Arbania quoted the statement of Indonesian Minister of Defense of the 2014-2019 period General TNI (Ret.) Dr. (H.C.) Ryamizard Ryacudu, “If radicalism is still maintained, it is not impossible that in the next 30 years this country will be destroyed. The future of the nation is in the hands of students and young people.” For this reason, Arbania urged students to resist the efforts of disintegration groups that deviate and divide the nation.

The panel discussion event which was held on Wednesday (29/06), at Balai Sidang UI was also attended by Vice Rector for Cooperation of Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia Jamhari Ma’ruf; Vice Dean of Faculty of Social Sciences of Nahdlatul Ulama Indonesia Naeni Amanullah M.Sc.; and students from various universities in Greater Jakarta.
