Universitas Indonesia (UI) continues to make brilliant achievements at the international level, bringing Indonesia’s name to shine in the world of geosciences. At the 2023 SEG Challenge Bowl, the student team from the Department of Geosciences, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) UI managed to achieve extraordinary achievements by becoming first place at the Asia Pacific level and second place at the international level.

The SEG Challenge Bowl competition, organized by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), a non-profit organization that facilitates exploration geophysicists, is a test of students’ knowledge and skills in the field of geoscience. This competition, which is similar to a quiz bowl, encourages participants to give correct, fast, and accurate answers.

The UI student team that made this brilliant achievement consisted of Cecilia Patra Dewanty (UI Geophysics 2019) and Kevinsyah Aulia Lubis (UI Geology 2019). They have demonstrated incredible dedication, knowledge, and teamwork throughout the competition.

The road to this achievement started at the regional level, where the UI team succeeded in winning 1st place at the SEG Challenge Bowl Asia Pacific Region 2023 which was held virtually on June 18th 2023. At this regional level, the UI team defeated strong competitors from 14 universities in Indonesia, India, and Malaysia, thus making them advance to international level competitions.

At the international level, the UI team managed to maintain their superiority by winning 2nd place at the SEG Challenge Bowl World Finals 2023. The UI team managed to perform successfully at the event which was held on August 29th 2023 in Houston, Texas, United States.

This competition involves geophysics and geology study programs from 16 well-known universities around the world, such as the Colorado School of Mines (United States), University of Calgary (Canada), Universidad Nacional de San Juan (Latin America), and many others. This extraordinary achievement is clear evidence of UI students’ commitment to achieving excellence in the field of geosciences.

“Universitas Indonesia is very proud to have students who not only excel at the national level, but are also able to compete successfully on the international stage. “This achievement reflects the hard work and support of various parties from departments, faculties, to universities in developing students’ interests and self-actualization.” said Prof. Abdul Haris, Vice Rector for Academic and Student Affairs at UI in expressing his appreciation.
