The profession of sworn translator is one of the skills needed by the industrial world, especially for agencies that require ratification of documents in foreign languages and are legally recognized. Based on the Regulation of the Minister of Law and Human Rights Number 4 of 2019, to become a Sworn Translator, one must pass the translator qualification exam conducted by the National Professional Certification Agency (BNSP) and coordinated by a professional organization or university.
Universitas Indonesia Professional Certification Institute (LSP UI) is the body that coordinates the translator’s qualification exam activities through certification activities for sworn translators. Universitas Indonesia Professional Certification Institute and the Ministry of Law and Human Rights have held an Equalization Test for Sworn Translators of the Governor’s Decree at the UI Vocational Education Program on 17-18 June 2022.
Head of Universitas Indonesia Professional Certification Institute, Dr. Rahmi Setiawati, S.Sos., M.Sc., conveyed that the certification test activity was carried out for translators who had previously been sworn in by a Governor’s Decree so that they could be equalized in accordance with applicable legal provisions.
“The certification was carried out by direct appointment from the Ministry of Law and Human Rights and BNSP to Universitas Indonesia Professional Certification Institute to conduct a translator qualification exam. A total of forty translators have conducted translator qualification exams for the Indonesian-English and English-Indonesian directions,” said Rahmi.
Meanwhile, the Director of the UI Vocational Education Program, Padang Wicaksono, S.E., Ph.D, expressed his pride in holding the certification to support the sworn translator profession. He said, “Universitas Indonesia Professional Certification Institute, as a special work unit under Vocational UI, strives to continue to support all activities that can help improve the quality of the profession in Indonesia.”
Every year, LSP UI certifies more than 700 UI Vocational students. The certification is a form of support from Vocational UI as a companion document other than a diploma, which is given as proof of the competence of graduates who are qualified and competitive in the industry.
“Furthermore, Universitas Indonesia Professional Certification Institute will also cooperate with the Ministry of Law and Human Rights in the sworn translator qualification exam for other foreign languages. We hope that the Sworn Translator scheme can also be immediately applied to all prospective graduates of the University of Indonesia,” said Rahmi.
