As many as 20 chess players with Grandmaster (GM) and Woman International Master (WIM) titles took part in the rapid chess tournament organized by the Management Institute of the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Indonesia (LM FEB UI) in collaboration with the Indonesian Chess Association (PERCASI). This activity is one of a series of events to celebrate the 60th anniversary of LM FEB UI in the beginning of this year.

Six of the 20 world-level chess players participating in the LM FEB UI Rapid Chess Tournament 2023 were GM Novendra Priasmoro, WGM/IM Medina Warda Aulia, WGM Dewi Ardhiani Anastasia Citra, IM Yoseph Theolifus Taher, IM Gilbert Elroy Tarigan, and WIM Dita Karenza. Apart from them, there were selected chess players from FEB UI community who took part in the 15-minute swiss system rapid chess game.

Dean of FEB UI Teguh Dartanto, Ph.D. opened the event and shared that this tournament aims to enrich the skills of the players and increase audience interest in chess, especially for all UI academics. The selection of the chess tournament as one of the activities held by LM FEB UI is based on Indonesia’s enormous potential in playing world-class chess.

Meanwhile, Dr. Willem Makaliwe, the Head of LM FEB UI, explained that this game consisted of 5 rounds which were held in a day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. PERCASI, which is led by Chief Referee Chessy Prila Hariputra, SKM, FA., is the party that regulates the match technicalities to comply with the standards of the International Chess Federation (FIDE).

After the match ended at 4 p.m., the chess players listened to closing remarks from the Head of Match and Refereeing Executive Board (PB) of PERCASI Agus Subandrijo, SE, MM, FA. while waiting for the final ranking announcement. Agus really appreciates the activities that have been carried out and hope that this tournament can be a starting point that can open up various positive opportunities for the advancement of chess in the university environment, especially at UI.

In this tournament GM Novendra Priasmoro won 1st place with the score: PTS 4 BH 18.5 SB 14.5 FIDE 13.5, followed by IM Yoseph Theolifus Taher who won 2nd place with the score: PTS 4 BH 16 SB 12 FIDE 12.5, and IM Gilbert Elroy Tarigan as the third winner with the score: PTS 4 BH 15 SB 11 FIDE 12. Each participant received a prize of 10 million rupiahs, 7.5 million rupiahs, and 5 million rupiahs respectively. Apart from the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners, there was the Favorite Winner for local chess players which was won by Muliadi Widjaja, who is a Lecturer in Economics at FEB UI.
