Prof. Dr. Ir. Gandjar Kiswanto, M.Eng., a lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), received an award from The O&J Péters Grant for Development Cooperation 2022. The award was given during the World Congress of Micro and Nano Manufacturing 2022 in Leuven, Belgium.

Prof. Gandjar’s past research achievements meet the criteria of the O&J Peters Foundation.

The institute was founded in 1986, following the awarding of the prestigious Georg Schlesinger Award to Professor Jacques Péters by the Senate of the Federal State of Berlin. The O&J Péters Grant focuses on several areas, including manufacturing systems, dimensional metrology, precision engineering, production management, mechatronics, robotics, medical technology, and sustainable production.

There are three categories in The O&J Péters Grant. First, a postdoc scholarship for research at KU Leuven, for 3-12 months. Secondly, financial support for research or educational projects in developing countries supported by KU Leuven’s Department of Mechanical Engineering. Third, a grant to a young academic in a developing country, with a Ph.D. from KU Leuven, to start his/her academic career at a technical school in his/her country. Of the three categories, Prof. Gandjar won the second category.

This category was achieved due to the fulfillment of the excellent past research achievement criteria. One of the researches that earned Prof. Gandjar this award was the development and manufacture of a 5-Axis Micro Milling machine conducted with students. This machine has a level of accuracy and precision equivalent to products produced by well-known industries. The advantage is that Prof. Gandjar and his team are able to produce products with high quality, but at a much cheaper price, which is about 1/10 or even more.

Prof. Gandjar is grateful for receiving a prestigious award from KU Leuven. KU Leuven is a renowned university whose existence in the field of manufacturing is recognized worldwide, both by universities and industry.

“This achievement motivates me to work and produce even better research and have an international impact. May I have a long life, good health, blessings and can continue to carry out research and work to produce something that has a positive impact on society, UI, Indonesia, and for international level,” Prof. Gandjar said.

Prof. Dr. Ir. Gandjar Kiswanto, M.Eng. earned a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering at FTUI 1995. The Pontianak-born man completed his master’s and doctoral education in Production Engineering, Machine Design, Automation at the Department of Werktuigkunde-KU, Leuven in 1998 and 2003. His teaching career began in 1995 with courses in Mechatronics, Automation and Robotics, Machine Vision Systems, CAD/CAM, and Computer Basics.

Apart from being a lecturer, Prof. Gandjar is also currently the Chair of the Design, Manufacturing and Automation Science Group. Previously, he served as Head of the Laboratory of Manufacturing Technology and Automation DTM FTUI, as well as Secretary of the Department, and finally as DirectorrectorOperations and Maintenance of UI Facilities (January 2015 to January 2022).

Some of his scientific publications include The Effect of Spindle Speed, Feed-Rate and Machining Time to the Surface Roughness and Burr Formation of Aluminum Alloy 1100 in Micro-Milling Operation (2014), A Hybrid Analytical-and Discrete-Based Methodology for Determining Cutter-Workpiece Engagement in Five-Axis Milling (2015), Micro-Dimple Pattern Process and Orthogonal Cutting Force Analysis of Elliptical Vibration Texturing (2016), Investigation of The Micro-Milling Process of Thin-Wall Features of Aluminum Alloy 1100 (2017), and The Digital Twin Application for Micro-Tool Wear Monitoring with Open-Source CAD System (2022).
