Pollution and environmental damage today are more anthropogenic; human activities cause the most significant proportion of ecological quality degradation, whether intentionally or not. The response that emerged was a variety of resolutions and preventive measures that tend to be anthropocentric, as many experts have proposed. It then sticks out the hypothetical assumption that environmental management is essentially the same as the management of human activities (environmental management is identical to human activities management).

The concept of sustainable development refers to the agreement that development efforts carry out to meet the needs and survival of the present without compromising the right to meet the needs of future generations. In addition, sustainable development with an environmental perspective means efforts to improve the quality of human life while remaining vigilant so as not to disturb and exceed the ability of ecosystems that support life.

Human development and efforts to protect and preserve the environment must integrate to achieve the sustainable development of human communities.

The development process is an interaction of various main production factor variables, namely:

  1. Human resources,
  2. Natural resources,
  3. Capital,
  4. Technology, and
  5. Institutional and managerial skills.

Regarding sustainable development, maintenance and its existence relate to the five variables and the interaction processes between the five.

The first principle of the Rio Declaration on environment and development (1992) states that: Humans are the main target of sustainable development. It is because humans have the right to a decent and productive life in harmony with nature.
Based on the above background, the Environmental Science Study Program has 3 (three) specializations, namely:

  1. Industrial Environmental Management (MLI)
  2. Sustainable Development Planning (PPB)
  3. Environmental Protection (PL)

Deskripsi Program Studi

Environmental studies is a field of science that aims to shed light on the causal relations between elements composing the environment. It finds its scientific base in ecology and applies basic laws of nature to the conservation of matter and energy.

On observing its surroundings, a question arises inside the human mind, which in turn triggers more advanced observations aiming to obtain satisfying answers until a certain hypothesis is formed. Preceding this hypothesis, procedures of research and experimentation are formed and carried out (by observation and the application of the laws of nature on the conservation of matter and energy), aiming to prove the hypothesized answers to the questions posed until new theories and theorems are formed which answer questions pertaining to the environment.

In the new paradigm, Environmental Studies was raised from being a Master’s Programme to a Doctoral Programme. Environmental Studies is a field of science that provides answers to the need for:

  • The expansion of studies on the mechanisms of environmental change,
  • The expansion of methods of environmental research from the perspective of qualitative and quantitative approaches and a participative form of research, and
  • The placement of knowledge on the existence and nature of humans in societal systems amidst studies on natural sciences.

A consequence of the answer above is the need for the development of new indicators, formulas, or theories in environmental sciences, which places emphasis on the following:

  • Diagnostics of environmental problems through the study of the processes and mechanisms of environmental change through issues of a social, biological, and physical nature
  • Innovation of methods or means of solving environmental problems, based specifically on Indonesian conditions, and
  • Theories on social structures and their place in the environment they inhabit.

Admission to the Environmental Studies Doctoral Programme is through SIMAK UI.
