DGB UI Webinar: Ethics for Using ChatGPT in the Academic Environment
The presence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has ‘shaken’ the world, in recent years, including in the world of education. Moreover, the launch of the latest generation of the ‘Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer’ application, which is more popularly known as ChatGPT, has forced a complete reorganization of the way of thinking and governance of our world of education.
On the one hand, that AI technology can help users in carrying out simple tasks such as describing information in a structured manner, finish complex tasks such as creating program code (coding) if the user wants to create a website, and even help users to make poetry. On the other hand, this super-sophisticated technology also triggers various problems, including matters of academic ethics.
In response to this, the Council of Professors at Universitas Indonesia (DGB UI) initiated a webinar with the theme: “Ethics of Using ChatGPT in the Academic Environment”, which is planned to be held online, on Saturday, March 25, 2023, 9.00 a.m. to 12.30 p.m.. Head of DGB UI Prof. Harkristuti Harkrisnowo, S.H., M.A., Ph.D. explained that this webinar is intended to “get input or responses that will assist us in the preparation of the Ethical Guidelines for Using ChatGPT among UI academics and non-academic.”
This webinar, which is a series of DGB UI Webinar Series, was organized by the Joint Committee, namely Committee I and Committee V of DGB UI. Chair of the Webinar Committee Prof. Dr. Ir. Riri Fitri Sari, M.Sc., M.M., who is also the Coordinator of Committee I, DGB UI, explained that apart from presenting four speakers, UI’s key stakeholders were also invited to the webinar, namely UI Rector, Chairman of Board of Trustees (MWA) UI, Chairman of Academic Senate (SA) UI, Vice Chancellors, Deans, School Director, UI Vocational Director, and Head and Deputy Head of Student Executive Board UI.
The key material in the webinar is “ChatGPT and Reimagine Education”, which will be delivered by Prof. Dr. Ir. Riri Fitri Sari, M.Sc., M.M. (FT UI). Meanwhile, the three main materials to be discussed include (1) “Artificial Intelligence and Academic Ethics” by Prof. Dr. Wisnu Jatmiko, M. Kom.Eng (Fasilkom UI), (2) “Taking the Benefits and Avoiding the Harms of ChatGPT” by Prof. Drs. Heru Suhartanto, M.Sc., Ph.D. (Fasilkom UI), and (3) “Addressing to ChatGPT Concern Wisely” by Dr. Fuad Gani, S.S., M.A. (FEB UI).
It is hoped that various inputs from UI’s key stakeholders will provide explanations and a shared understanding of ChatGPT, the positive and negative impacts of ChatGPT, and strategies for using ChatGPT at UI. Hopefully, the results of the webinar can be used as material for recommendations for the preparation of the Ethical Guidelines for Using ChatGPT in the UI environment.
