Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science Fixing Its Position on The Global Level, Underwent ASIIN International Visitation

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Indonesia (FMIPA UI) proposes four Undergraduate Study Programs to obtain international accreditation through the Akkreditierungsagentur für Studiengänge der Ingenieurwissenschaften, der Informatik, der Naturwissenschaften und der Mathematik (ASIIN). This is an effort to strengthen the position of FMIPA UI at the international level, by proposing the four study programs, namely Mathematics, Physics, Biology, and Geography.

ASIIN is an independent international accrediting agency based in Germany for quality assurance of a degree program in the disciplines of engineering, informatics, natural sciences, and mathematics. Since 2000, ASIIN has the right to provide an accreditation stamp from the German Accreditation Council, in addition to the ASIIN quality stamp. ASIIN is registered in The European Quality Assurance Register for Higher Education (EQAR) until August 31, 2026. EQAR is included in the list of accreditation registers recognized by the Indonesian government.

The four study programs began to undergo a series of online visits/audits by the ASSIN peer review/assessor team on 21-23 February 2022. The ASIIN Peersteam consisted of seven assessors, namely Prof. Dr. Péter Bagoly-Simó (Geography – Humboldt-University Berlin), Prof. Dr. Robert Hänsch (Biology – Technical University Braunschweig), Prof. Dr. Roth Stefan (Physics – RWTH Aachen University), Prof. Dr. Frank Loose (Mathematics – University of Tübingen), Silke Bargstädt-Franke (Industry – Federal Office for Information Security), Luthfia Hastifa (Student – Hasanuddin University), and Dr. Daniel Seegers (Secretariat – ASIIN).

Present at the visitation was the Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Dr. rer. grout. Abdul Haris, M.Sc., Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation, drg. Nurtami, Ph.D., Sp, OF(K), Vice Chancellor for Human Resources Prof. Dr. Ir. Dedi Priadi, DEA., and the Directors/Heads of Units at the University Administration Center. In his opening speech, Prof. Abdul Haris said that Universitas Indonesia has always been committed in adapting and innovating as well as encouraging students to gain global competitive advantage, and explore their potential.

“We continue to improve our quality and instill a culture of quality at Universitas Indonesia (UI). Currently, UI is ranked as the best university in Indonesia according to Times Higher Education and Webometrics,” said Prof. Haris, who is also a lecturer at The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Indonesia with geophysics expertise. Although this series of visitation activities was carried out online in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic situation, he hoped that these activities could run smoothly and provide the best results for The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Indonesia.

Head of the Academic Quality Assurance Unit of The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Indonesia, Dr. Denny R. Silaban, M.Kom., as well as Team Leader of ASIIN FMIPA UI said that his party has carried out various series of activities with lecturers, students, and alumni to be able to make the visitation process a success which is the most important part in obtaining the international accreditation. These activities include socialization and simulations to students, lecturers, and alumni.

Not only that, continued Dr. Denny, because the visitation was conducted online, his team built a special page containing interactive videos and photos to show the labs and facilities at The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Indonesia to ASIIN peer reviewers. The page can be accessed through the The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Indonesia website. Through this page, ASIIN Peerscan see in detail the real conditions at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Indonesia, especially for the campus facilities section. So that it can make it easier for Peersto conduct assessments and reviews.

In the closing session which was held on 23 February 2022, ASIIN’s peer review provided a summary of the four audited study programs. On the same occasion, Prof. Haris expressed his gratitude and closing statement. The results of this accreditation assessment are planned to be received by The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Indonesia in June 2022 after the ASIIN Accreditation Commission for Degree Programs meeting.

The Dean of Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Dede Djuhana, Ph.D., fully supports and oversees the ASIIN process by attending every series of events, starting from socialization and simulations to the civitas, alumni, and users.
