PROPOSING AN EFFICIENT DATA-READING METHOD, FASILKOM UI STUDENTS WON BIG DATA CHALLENGE 2022

In today’s digital era, data is an important asset that can be utilized and processed for decision making to business development. A collection of data that can be utilized is called Big Data, which has a large volume, fast processing speed, and is in a structured/unstructured/semi-structured form. By utilizing 691,000 data collected manually on a social media platform, T-Sne Team from the Faculty of Computer Science (Fasilkom) at Universitas Indonesia (UI) tried to analyze public perceptions and opinions of Social Health Insurance Administration Body (BPJS Kesehatan).

The T-Sne team was asked to analyze the topic and deliver Big Data material entitled ‘Evaluation of Public Perceptions and Sentiments of BPJS Program with Dynamic Topic Modeling and Sentiment Analysis’ in front of the judges in the final round of Statistika Ria and Festival Data Science (Satria Data) 2022 competition. This material led the T-Sne team to advance to the top 10 round, and eventually the T-Sne Team won third place for the Big Data Challenge (BDC) division.

The competition was organized by the National Achievement Center, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of Indonesia, attended by 70 universities in Indonesia including, IPB University, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember, Institut Teknologi Bandung, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Universitas Airlangga, Universitas Diponegoro, and others. There are 7,738 students from all over Indonesia who registered to take part in the event.

In the Satria Data 2022 competition, UI sent 62 student delegates consisting of 25 students from Fasilkom, 35 students from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and 2 students from the Faculty of Engineering. Of those 62 UI students, only the T-Sne team of Fasilkom UI consisting of three Computer Science study program students, Nyoo Steven Christopher Handoko (2021); Made Swastika Nata Negara (2021); and Eko Julianto Salim (2019), qualified to become a finalist in the BDC division of the Satria Data 2022 competition.

“We do two things, namely sentiment analysis and topic modeling, for which we collect the data ourselves using keywords containing ‘BPJS’. We did topic modeling to find out what topics that people talk about on social media about BPJS Kesehatan. We do sentiment analysis to find out whether the public has positive, neutral, or negative sentiments towards the topics we get,” said a representative from the T-Sne team of Fasilkom UI, Nyoo Steven Christopher Handoko.

He and his team proposed innovations to process data more efficiently so that the insights obtained from the results of the analysis could be useful for related parties. Nyoo said that many of the UI team, especially Fasilkom for the Big Data Challenge division, had passed the preliminary phase, but they did not qualify to enter the top 10 for the final match. The achievements gained by his team received support from the team in the UI contingent, as well as full support from the supervising lecturers, one of whom was Dr. Dina Chahyati, S.Kom., M.Kom.

Satria Data is a competition to measure students’ abilities in statistics, data science, and their application, which will be held on October 1-December 8, 2022. Apart from hard skills in statistics and data science, this activity is also an arena for soft skills competition such as communication, visualization, cooperation, and creativity skills in solving complex problems. Satria Data presents four types of competitions, which are National Statistics Competition, Statistics Essay Competition, Statistics Infographic Competition, and Big Data Challenge. Besides competition, this event consists of three groups of activities, which are Knowledge Development, Competition, and Credit Earning.

Responding to the achievements, Dean of Fasilkom UI Dr. Petrus Mursanto said that Fasilkom UI is determined to be the top referral for the development of computer science and information technology in Indonesia. “Fasilkom UI must be a leading institution in developing computer science and information technology in Indonesia. With this achievement at least, it proves our manifest contribution. Congratulations to the Fasilkom UI team,” said Dean Mursanto.
