In celebrating his 93rd birthday, environmental expert, economist and politician, Prof. Emil Salim, MA, Ph.D. delivered a declaration carrying the message “One Earth for All Generations: Building a Golden Generation of Indonesia in 2045”. The declaration was summarized and marked by the launch of a book with the same title on Thursday (08/06) at the UI Depok campus.

The current condition of the Earth is getting warmer, even a temperature increase of 1.5 degrees will have serious consequences for future generations. Unfortunately, the Indonesian people are among the highest percentage in the world who do not believe that climate change is the result of human activity.

Apart from taking into account the large potential of Natural Resources (SDA) and Human Resources (HR), Indonesia also plays an important role in overcoming global climate change. Geographically, Indonesia is also vulnerable to natural disasters that are getting worse due to climate change. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen climate resilience to maintain the sustainability of food security, water security, and energy security which are closely related to soil security.

According to Prof. Emil, to overcome the threat from climate change that will occur in the future, it is very important to involve all the experts, scientists and technology that we have. This effort must be carried out without being influenced by political considerations. “Lack of water on earth, rising sea levels due to melting ice at the North Pole, are the result of climate change which has resulted in various natural disasters such as landslides and changes in farmers’ cropping patterns,” said Prof. Emil.

In the event which was attended by the Dean of FEB UI, Teguh Dartanto, Ph.D. and Professor of FEB UI Prof. Dra. Omas Bulan Samosir, Ph.D., the Emil Salim Institute was also declared. This declaration was driven by experts and the millennial generation who have the same vision in an effort to realize Prof. Emil Salim preparation of Indonesia Emas 2045.

“Prof. Emil Salim has made a big contribution to the nation and state, as well as to UI, especially the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB). We hope that Prof. Emil Salim’s dream for UI and all Indonesian generations can be achieved through the hard work of the Emil Salim Institute,” said Prof. Omas Samosir in his remarks.

Some of the programs prepared by the Emil Salim Institute include strengthening software such as preparing guidelines as well as mitigation and adaptation. Hardware strengthening is carried out by taking technological transformation steps. Brainware strengthening is also done by increasing the capacity of human resources as the driving force that will face climate change.

The steps in preparing for Indonesia Emas 2045 are determined by the time frame, application of technology as well as management and strategy. “Hopefully, in 2030 the initial target will be achieved towards Indonesia Emas 2045,” said President Director Emil Salim Institute, E. Kurniawan Padma., S.Sc., MT.

Prof. Emil Salim, MA, Ph.D. is an international environmental figure who received the “The Leader for the Living Planet Award” from the World Wide Fund (WWF). The Zayed Prize Award at the Dubai International Convention Center, in the category “Actions that Create a Positive Impact on Society” and also the Blue Planet Prize, was received by Prof. Emil in 2006 from The Asahi Glass Foundation. This appreciation is given for his dedication, leadership and contribution in efforts to preserve the environment and sustainable development in Indonesia and the world.
