The risk of injury when playing sports may happen. For professional athletes, sports injuries can end their careers.

“In the past, we often met young athletes who had to return to their homes because their injuries were not treated properly. In fact, with proper holistic, comprehensive, and integrated treatment, these athletes can exercise again. We are grateful that the treatment of sports injuries in Indonesia has developed,” said Prof. Dr. Andri Maruli Tua Lubis, SpOT(K)., in his inauguration speech as Professor of Orthopedics and Traumatology, Faculty of Medicine UI. (Saturday, 17/2).

In Indonesia, the problem of treating sports-related injuries in athletes has begun to receive attention in the last 30 years. Prof. Andri said that Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital had pioneered specialized education in treating sports injuries in Orthopedics through fellowship education and Faculty of Medicine UI through a subspecialty education program. The Indonesian Medical Council has accepted the specialization in treating sports injuries as one of the specializations in Orthopedics and Traumatology.

Therefore, injured athletes can seek the best treatment in Indonesia without traveling abroad. Advanced treatments, such as minimally invasive surgery and cell therapy using stem cells, have also been provided to athletes in Indonesia with satisfactory results.

“Currently, there is a better understanding of the need for teamwork in treating sports injuries. Reconstructive or repair surgery by an orthopedic expert is only a small part of the overall treatment of injuries. Treatment of sports injuries needs to be done in a holistic, comprehensive, and integrated manner,” said Prof. Andri in his inauguration speech, “Holistic Management of Sports Injuries: Towards Golden Achievements in Indonesian Sports”.

He also said that the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Study Program and the Sports Medicine Study Program have been developing very well. This allows collaboration between treating doctors and athletes who have suffered sports injuries in terms of surgical treatment by an orthopedic expert, recovery by physical medicine and rehabilitation experts, and training by sports medicine experts.

Through the advancement of sports injury treatment, athletes can recover, return to competition, and achieve optimal performance. Holistic management is needed to involve orthopedic doctors and athletes who suffer and need sophisticated, comprehensive, and integrated treatment.

Surgical techniques for sports injury treatments and assistive devices or implants are also developing rapidly. Therefore, research and good clinical trials must be done to obtain the most appropriate evidence.

The inauguration was held in the IMERI Building Hall, UI Salemba Campus, led directly by the UI Chancellor, Prof. Ari Kuncoro, S.E., M.A., Ph.D. There was also the Chairman of the UI MWA for the 2002–2007 Period, Dr. Mochtar Riady, and the General Chairperson of the Indonesian Doctors Association, Dr. dr. M. Adib Khumaidi, SpOT.

Prof. Andri is also active in research activities related to orthopedics and traumatology and has produced 46 international journal articles and six national journal articles. He is also on the editorial board of several journals, including Orthopedic Journal of Sports Medicine (OJSM); Knee Surgery and Related Research (KSRR); Editorial Board for the Asia-Pacific Journal of Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy, Rehabilitation and Technology (AP-SMART); and Clinics in Shoulder and Elbow (CiSE).

Prof. Andri completed his undergraduate and doctoral education at the Faculty of Medicine UI, general practitioner education in 1994; Orthopedic and Traumatology Specialist Medical Education Program in 2004; and Doctor of Medical Sciences in 2009. He also received various scholarships, such as Fellowship Training in Adult Joint Reconstruction: Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Singapore General Hospital, Singapore (2003); Fellowship Training in Arthroscopy and Orthopedic Sports Medicine, Yonsei Severance University Hospital, Seoul, Korea (2004); and Fellowship Training in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, Kyung Hee University Hospital, Seoul, Korea (2005).
