The Ministry of Health of Indonesia stated that breast cancer ranks first in terms of the highest number of cancers in Indonesia, and it is one of the first contributing causes of death from cancer. According to Globocan data in 2020, the number of new cases of breast cancer reached 68,858 cases (16.6%) of a total of 396,914 new cases of cancer in Indonesia. Meanwhile, the number of deaths reached more than 22 thousand cases.

This data inspired Ikatan Wanita Keluarga (IWK), Faculty of Computer Science (Fasilkom), Universitas Indonesia (UI) to provide education on the importance of early prevention of breast cancer for the public, especially UI community. In collaboration with Universitas Indonesia Hospital (RSUI), IWK Fasilkom UI held a seminar and medical examination entitled “Realize and Recognize: Early Detection of Breast Cancer” at the old B Building Auditorium, UI Campus, Depok.

Head of IWK Fasilkom UI Dyah Prawitasari said that this event was the first activity since the start of the new management of IWK Fasilkom UI and was held to coincide with Mother’s Day last December. “The purpose of this activity is to provide education on the importance of early prevention of breast cancer,” she said.

This activity was fully supported by Fasilkom UI. In his welcoming speech, Dean of Fasilkom UI Dr. Petrus Mursanto, said, “Coinciding with the celebration of Mother’s Day or more precisely Indonesian Women’s Day, I hope the role that all mothers or prospective mothers (Indonesian women) have as well as the presence of this activity are able to provide education and early awareness of the dangers related to breast cancer. I hope that Indonesian women are healthier and better, starting from themselves, their families and our daily environment,” said Dean Mursanto.

Referring to data from the Ministry of Health of Indonesia, early detection of breast cancer is very important. One of the speakers at the seminar, RSUI doctor, dr. Aris Ramdhani, Sp.B., said that breast cancer is the type of cancer with the highest number of cases, and it is one of the main causes of death from cancer. He said that this is because most breast cancer patients come for treatment at an advanced stage. “In fact, if the breast cancer is detected early and treated immediately, it can actually be defeated. Routinely doing SADARI (early detection) can help you protect yourself from breast cancer. Early detection saves lives,” said dr. Aris.

This seminar was moderated by dr. Afni Fatmasari, Sp.PD., from IWK Fasilkom UI. The event was also attended by Main Director of RSUI Dr. dr. Astuti Giantini Sp.PK(K), MPH who also gave a positive response to the IWK Fasilkom UI activity. This activity was attended by 80 participants from the executives, the lecturers, Fasilkom UI education staff, as well as the UI community across faculties.

This activity was also facilitated by RSUI for checking blood sugar, blood pressure, and clinical breast examination (SADANIS). The Sadanis examination was carried out at RSUI after the seminar was over. Sadari and Sadanis can be done every month on the 7th to 10th day from the first day of menstruation, or on the same date every month for menopausal women. By doing Sadari and Sadanis regularly, breast cancer can be found at an early stage and increase the life expectancy of sufferers.

Live streaming of the seminar can be watched via Fasilkom UI YouTube channel at the link https://youtu.be/U9zX8zDYuL4.
