Rapid changes in competition, user demand, technological trends, and the dynamics of regulatory changes have required organizations to be able to respond to these challenges and adapt quickly. Therefore, the process of value creation and technology-based innovation is one of the drivers of competitive advantage that must be owned by organizations that are in the process of becoming agile organizations in order to remain competitive in the upcoming industrial era 5.0.

“The design thinking approach can be an effective framework to help create value at various scales of implementation, starting from the process of developing technology-based product and service innovations, as well as the process of designing and managing organizational operations,” said Prof. Dr. -Eng. Amalia Suzianti, S.T., M.Sc., in the inauguration ceremony of her Professor title which was held online and offline on Saturday (15/10).

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Amalia Suzianti, S.T., M.Sc.

In her speech titled “Towards an Agile and Resilient Organization Through Technology-Based Value Creation and Innovation”, Prof. Amalia said design thinking is understood as a formal creative problem-solving method intended to drive innovation. Design thinking is usually characterized by three features, namely auser-centred approach, theuse of creativity for the “problem framing” process, and the use of prototyping to test product concepts.

In the last decade, Prof. Amalia said that the Product Development and Innovation Laboratory, Department of Industrial Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FEng) has carried out various research grants and community services that focus on the process of value creation through business model innovation and digital product or service innovation solutions. Some of these studies include the design of industrial service development strategies financial technology (Fintech), service flow design solution proposal and design evaluation of digital control room Transjakarta, digital platform design for reporting on Jakarta flood solutions through the Flood application, and design development strategies and platforms Digital innovation development with a digital e-cluster design thinking approach for supply chain efficiency of coffee SMEs exports to Europe

In the last multi-year research on the topic of e-cluster, there were two main outcomes that were successfully produced by the research. The first output is the design of the Bionic Farm application to connect all stakeholders in the Indonesian coffee export supply chain and encourage cooperation between exporters to meet the needs of export market demand. The second output of the follow-up research also analyzes the contribution of the ecluster platform toorganizational agility.

By implementing an integrated system through the design of the Bionic Farm application, aspects that affect the effectiveness and efficiency of the supply chain system such as cost, time, and information flow can be optimized properly. Through the development and utilization of digital platforms that can be accessed directly by all stakeholders, as well as by cutting links in the supply chain, it is hoped that Indonesian coffee SMEs will have greater opportunities to compete in the international market.

The research conducted by Prof. Amalia and her colleagues has provided insight into the reality of technology-based value creation and innovation through a design thinking approach and she highlighted the need for auser experience creation process that will influence the success of innovation and business strategy. The adoption of a design thinking approach in the strategic domain has also been empirically proven to influence volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA) challenges that focus on new value propositions that are relevant and contribute significantly to organizational competitiveness and agility.

Prof. Amalia currently serves as UI’s Director of Human Resources (2022-present). His organizational experience at FEngincludes being the Head of the Product Development and Innovation Laboratory of the Industrial Engineering Department (2012 – present) and Chair of the Industrial Engineering Department (2018 – 2022). Prof. Amalia completed her bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering in 1996 – 2000. Later, at Brandenburgische Technische Universität Cottbus, Germany, he earned a Master of Science (MSc.) Technology and Innovation Management, in 2004. Prof. Amalia completed her doctoral studies, Docteur en Sciences de l’Ingenieur (Dr.-Ing) Innovation System Design, at Technische Universität Berlin – University of Luxembourg, in 2010.

The inauguration of professors which was held today was led by the Rector of UI, Prof. Ari Kuncoro, SE, MA, Ph.D., at the Makara Art Center and broadcast live virtually through the UI Teve Youtube channel. The event was attended by invited guests, including the CEO of The Wisemen & Company, Jennifer Heryanto; representatives from PT Wiratman, Tantri Heryantina; and Associate Professor of Bioengineering, New York University, Dr.-Ing Azhar Zam, S.Si., M.Sc.

In the last five years, there have been 11 recent scientific works of Prof. Amalia, five of which are entitled “Designing a sustainable digital control room for public transport: a comprehensive human performance measurement model” Production and Manufacturing Research, Volume 10, Issue 1, 2022; “Risk Analysis Approach to Identifying Actions that Reduce Waste for a Lean Agricultural Supply Chain” Journal of Industrial Engineering and Management, Volume 15, Issue 2, 2022; “Continuance Intention of E-Learning: The Condition and Its Connection with Open Innovation” Journal of Open Innovation Technology, Market and Complexity, 2021; “Designing a User-Centred Public Transportation Services: An Integrated Quality Service Systems Approach” International Journal of Agile Systems and Management, 2021; and Strategic Recommendations for Financial Technology Service Development: A Comprehensive Risk-BeneFit-IPA-Kano Analysis” Journal of Modeling in Management, 2021.
