SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY PARK UI RECEIVED SUPPORT FROM ASIAN DEVELOPMENT BANK IN RESEARCH AND INNOVATION COMMERCIALIZATION

Universitas Indonesia (UI) collaborated with Asian Development Bank (ADB) to design Proyek Penguatan Riset dan Inovasi melalui Kawasan Sains dan Teknologi yang Modern dan Efisien, or also known as Promoting Research and Innovation through Modern and Efficient Science and Technology Parks Project. In this project, UI was selected as one of four Science and Technology Parks/STP to be built in Indonesia.

The collaboration between UI and ADB was marked by the launch of the project which was held last Monday (27/2) at the Auditorium of Building D, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) for the establishment of STP at UI. In this project, ADB has agreed to support the Indonesian government’s strategy in the commercialization of research and innovation, including efforts to increase the success of start-ups.

The launching event was attended by Director General of Higher Education, Research, and Technology Prof. Ir. Nizam, M.Sc., DIC, Ph.D., IPU, Asean Eng.; Country Director of ADB Jiro Tominaga; Institutional Director of Kemendikbudristek Dr. Lukman, S.T., M.Hum.; as well as Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation UI drg. Nurtami, Ph.D., Sp,OF(K).

Promoting Research and Innovation through Modern and Efficient Science and Technology Parks Project in the future will focus on improving research, innovation, and start-up incubation facilities as well as providing grants for the implementation of applied research and start-up incubation. This is done to improve the expertise of STP researchers and the ability of research and innovation management staff.

According to drg. Nurtami, UI as an educational institution is well aware of its role and responsibility as an agent of change for the nation as well as a support for the national ecosystem. For 73 years, through the Directorate of Innovation and Science Techno Park (DISTP), UI with partners from the government, business actors, and the community have continued to develop research to create innovative products that are useful for Indonesia. “For this achievement, UI is committed to continuously encourage researchers, especially UI academics, to produce domestic innovation products at the best price and quality that are widely beneficial to society,” said drg. Nurtami.

This project will also help strengthen STP in the development of various technologies that are in line with the needs of Indonesia’s priority economic sectors. Some of them are renewable energy and storage technologies; transportation in the form of electric and autonomous vehicles; information and communication technology or smart technology; health technology, pharmaceuticals, and drugs; as well as technology for processing agricultural and food products in the form of functional food products and halal food.

In addition, STP will be strengthened by increasing public-private partnerships; increasing the competitiveness and productivity of the workforce, along with the development and adoption of new technologies; and strengthening entrepreneurship and job creation for young generation.
