Dr. Lukmanda Evan Lubis, M.Si., a lecturer in the Department of Physics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) Universitas Indonesia (UI) and a researcher in the field of Medical Physics, won the international award The P.N. Krishnamurthy Memorial Young Achiever Award 2023 from Asia-Oceania Federation of Organizations for Medical Physics (AFOMP). This award was received thanks to his activeness in service, research, and educational activities in Medical Physics, as well as being active in the Central Leadership Council (DPP) of the Alliance of Indonesian Medical Physicists (AFISMI) as Chair of Research and Scientific Publications.

In addition, AFOMP considers that Dr. Evan is a medical physicist who has a leadership spirit as a member of the Executive Committee of the Southeast Asia Federation of Organizations for Medical Physics (SEAFOMP). He received the award via email from the AFOMP Award and Honors Committee, on Monday (18/9). “This award motivates me to continue working, conducting research, and producing even better research results,” said Dr. Evan. He also hopes that his efforts in service, research, and activity in the field of medical physics will have a positive impact on the progress of medical physics in Indonesia and on the international stage.

Since 2012, Dr. Evan has been involved in various research and development activities contributing to physical science in diagnostic and interventional radiology services. The research carried out was under the guidance of a pioneering Medical Physicist in Indonesia, namely Professor of FMIPA UI Prof. Dr. Djarwani Soeharso and Head of the Medical Physics Masters Study Program FMIPA UI Dr. Supriyanto Ardjo Pawiro. Apart from that, this research activity also collaborates with alumni and medical physicist colleagues from various hospitals in Indonesia as partners.

Together with his team, he received research funding worth € 32,000 or the equivalent of IDR 500,000,000 from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the world atomic agency headquartered in Vienna, Austria, in 2021. The research carried out by Dr. Evan and his team aims to improve radiation safety for patients, radiation workers and the public with a research proposal entitled “Establishing Guidelines and Recommendations for Solid State Dosimetry in Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology”.

Meanwhile, he also contributed when Indonesia faced the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. At that time, Dr. Evan joined the AIRA (Artificial Intelligence for Radiological Applications) research team as Team Coordinator developing the DSS-CovIDNet innovation. This is a tool to help predict pneumonia cases due to Covid-19 using a deep-learning Artificial Intelligence (AI) based program.

With the achievements that Dr. Evan, Dean of FMIPA UI, Prof. Dede Djuhana, Ph.D., highly appreciated Dr. Evan has added to the list of achievements of FMIPA UI lecturers at world level. “Research activities by lecturers and researchers are the lifeblood of higher education. Therefore, we hope that our fellow lecturers at FMIPA UI will also be motivated, continue to broaden their scientific insight, and, no less important, maintain enthusiasm in research activities,” said Prof. Dede. As the recipient of the award, Dr. Evan was also invited by AFOMP to attend the Asia-Oceania Congress on Medical Physics (AOCMP) in India on 6th-9th of December 2023.
