Depok, 30 January 2024. After receiving an award from The Conversation Indonesia as the Most Productive Institution for Writing Popular Scientific Articles, the Nature Index again declared UI to be the best university in Indonesia. The Nature Index is an open-source database of author affiliations that aims to track their contributions to research articles. Besides being the greatest among educational institutions, UI is also excellent in research institutions.

This year, UI significantly increased the distribution of contributions for research, from 1.18 to 3.52. The value was obtained from 16 articles in high-quality international journals published from 1 September 2022 to 31 August 2023.

The Nature Index determines 145 natural science and health journals as references for assessing research articles. The journals are selected based on their reputation by an independent research group.

A total of 16 UI articles are research results from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, and Faculty of Engineering, which fall into four research subjects: Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Health Sciences, and Physical Sciences. UI increased share scores for Health Sciences subjects (from 0.28 to 0.56) and Physical Sciences (0.8 to 2.85)—the sixteen articles.

The sixteen articles were published in several international journals, including Nature, Nature Communications, Neuron, Chemical Communications, Gut, Journal of Infectious Diseases, The Lancet Global Health, The New England Journal of Medicine, ACS Nano, Applied Physics Letters, European Physical Journal C, and Physical Review B.

Among these articles, the article entitled “Strong Lensing and Shadow of Ayon-Beato–Garcia (ABG) Nonsingular Black Hole” was published in the European Physical Journal C and received the highest share value. This article was written by a research team from the Department of Physics, Faculty of Mathematics and Sciences UI, supervised by Dr. Handika S. Ramadhan.

Another article entitled “Towards Precise Constraints in Modified Gravity: Bounds on Alternative Coupling Gravity Using White Dwarf Mass-Radius Measurements” was written by a research team led by Prof. Anto Sulaksono from the Physics Department—and obtained a high Share score of 0.75.

According to the Director of Research and Development at UI, Munawar Khalil, S.Si., M.Eng.Sc., Ph.D., the ranking in Nature Index, we use the quantity of research to measure the researcher’s contribution to the study. If dozens of researchers do a study, the contribution made by each researcher is smaller than research carried out by two or four researchers. Therefore, quantity is not the only measurement in the Nature Index.

“Even though an institution published a lot of research, if the researcher’s contribution is small, the share value will also be small. Therefore, UI continues to encourage its researchers so more research articles can go into the world’s best journals to improve UI’s contribution,” said Khalil.
