Secure HT-Box, an innovation by Universitas Indonesia (UI) research team led by Prof.Dr-ing.Kalamullah Ramli, M.Eng., is designed to secure data/strategic information for Indonesian nation. This innovation was realized thanks to the support of a grant from Educational Fund Management Institution (LPDP), a joint license with PT Hikari Solusindo Sukses, and collaboration with National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN). PT Prasimax and Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) also contributed to developing these innovations in terms of marketing and improving sound quality.

Responding to the results of this research, UI Rector Prof. Ari Kuncoro, S.E., M.A., Ph.D. said, “The output of this research aims not only for state security but also for participating in realizing the value of an entrepreneurial university for UI, which collaborates science and research with technological development, producing research outcomes that are useful for business and industry.”

UI Vice Rector for Research and Innovation drg. Nurtami, Ph.D., Sp.OF(K) believes that Secure HT-Box has a positive impact on domestic data security. “So far, the encoded products used by state officials are external products that are vulnerable to exploitation by foreign parties. With the existence of domestic products with a minimum domestic component level achieved, the country’s need for the availability of secure communication tools can be fulfilled, with a data and information security system protected by a reliable and impenetrable security code,” she said.

With a mission to maximize the protection of the state’s strategic data, all state documents in various forms and communication media among state leaders and among the apparatus need to be protected with reliable and impenetrable information security techniques. This is the background for UI research team to develop a secure communication tool to protect the state’s strategic data/info.

Secure HT-Box works as a plug-in device, which consists of a handy talkie, hands-free headset, and voice encryption-decryption module. The voice emitted by the sender will be encrypted by the voice encryption-decryption module; then it is transmitted by the handy talkie. Subsequently, the voice is captured by the receiver’s handy talkie to be decrypted by the voice encryption-decryption module so that it can be heard clearly by the receiver.

Director of Innovation and Science Techno Park UI Ahmad Gamal, S.Ars., M.Si., M.U.P., Ph.D. stated that this research is a good response to the recent data security issue. “The issue of data leakage carried out by the Bjorka hacker recently disrupted national security conditions. The government is working hard to tackle this case and protect data related to state confidential information. In line with Law Number 27 of 2022 on Personal Data Protection, the results of this research are expected to be able to protect data as a whole,” he said.

Director of LPDP Research Wisnu Sardjono Soenarso, who was also present on the occasion, congratulated UI and also Prof. Kalamullah Ramli, for completing one stage for a research towards product commercialization, whic is the signing of a product license. He hopes that all components that support this research will jointly commit to develop the products produced by UI research team.

Principal Secretary of National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN) Y.B. Susilo Wibowo, S.E, M.M. responded positively to the results of this research. According to him, “The secure communication tool for strategic purposes built through this joint research is a communication tool that applies voice encoding techniques to be used in confidential or limited communication by the military and/or law enforcement in the territory of the Republic of Indonesia, but in the future it does not rule out the possibility that we can expand beyond that for the public interest.”

Meanwhile, Project Manager of PT. Hikari Solusindo Sukses Esha Ganesha SBW said, “Hikari is committed to becoming a strategic partner of universities in expanding innovative research products for widespread use.”

Universitas Indonesia and PT Hikari Solusindo Sukses officially established a collaboration marked by the signing of a product license cooperation agreement for Secure HT-Box invention today, (28/10). This cooperation concerns the expansion of secure communication tools for strategic interests through Secure HT-Box.

This research was funded by LPDP with two stages of approval. The first phase has been carried out this year with a portion of 70% of the total grant funds received, which amounts to Rp1,127,049,000 (one billion one hundred twenty-seven million forty-nine thousand rupiah). The budget realization that has been used is Rp939,492,947 (nine hundred thirty nine million four hundred ninety two thousand nine hundred forty seven rupiah) or 58.36% of the total grant value.
