One of many steps to mold young scientists from Islamic boarding schools, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) Universitas Indonesia (UI) is collaborating with Algebra International Islamic Boarding School (IIBS) Bogor. The Memorandum of Understanding signing ceremony was carried out by the Head of the Special Work Unit for the Applied Science Institute (UKK LST), Eko Waludi, M.Si., and the Masyayikh Council and IIBS School Principle, KH Khariri Makmun, Lc., M.A., at FMIPA, UI Depok Campus.

Both agreed to collaborate in terms of education, research, utilization of human resources and science, and community service. One of the objectives is to develop and master mathematics and natural sciences. Dean of FMIPA UI Prof. Dede Djuhana, Ph.D., said in his speech, FMIPA UI carries out the pillar of the Tridharma of Higher Education. The first pillar is education, the second pillar is research, and the third pillar is community service. According to him, collaboration with the Algebra Islamic boarding school is the implementation of the third pillar.

Furthermore, Prof. Dede emphasized that FMIPA UI is ready to commit to guiding boarding school students, UI students, and teaching staff, who are experts in science. Supervisors will regularly visit the Algebra Islamic Boarding School. He also said that the FMIPA UI teaching team will assist boarding school students regarding organic waste processing in their Islamic boarding schools. It will be done by adapting FMIPA UI’s Fixed Dome Digester Compose technology at the Parangtopo Nature Laboratory, UI Depok campus.

“We are committed to providing the best learning experience as we apply at FMIPA UI. One of them is using Fixed Dome Digester Compose technology at the Parangtopo Laboratory to process organic waste into quality liquid fertilizer and produce electrical energy. In the future, we can jointly create waste processing at the Algebra Islamic Boarding School by adapting this method under the guidance of the FMIPA UI teaching team,” said Prof. Grandfather. He hopes that the students can process waste into fertilizer or create alternative energy independently from waste.

Meanwhile, KH Khariri Makmun said that Algebra Islamic boarding school is suitable for carrying out science development at FMIPA UI, the leading science faculty in Indonesia. “The name of school Algebra is synonymous with Algebra, a branch of mathematics whose discussion targets simplifying and solving problems using substitute symbols. These are constants and variables because science is a branch of mathematics that includes number theory, geometry, and algebraic theory in research,” said KH Khariri.

From the collaboration, KH Khariri hopes that the Algebra Islamic Boarding School students and UI students will make this collaboration an excellent opportunity to develop science skills. This activity encourages them to create science-based breakthroughs that will be useful in improving the quality of human life in the future.
