UI INITIATED A FORUM FOR LEADERS, PRESENTING THE DEPUTY MINISTER OF FINANCE AND THE DEPUTY MINISTER OF SOES AS KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

As a speaker, Rector of Universitas Indonesia (UI) Prof. Ari Kuncoro, Ph.D. conveyed in front of executives and almost 300 participants from various sectors—the government, SOEs, the private sector, and the world of education that “Universitas Indonesia, as a higher education institution that bears the big name of Indonesia, is always required to provide solutions to the nation’s problems and to be a pioneer in appropriate learning methods so that our graduates can immediately contribute to the society according to their scientific fields, develop research that is more targeted, and implement community service that has an impact on public welfare.”

He added, “UI sees that continuing education for leaders in various fields can encourage Indonesia to move forward and be better prepared to face global competition. This is where the intervention from UI will create direct impacts on the community,” said Prof. Ari in his remarks when opening Indonesia Leadership Forum (ILF) 2023, which took place for two days (March 9-10, 2023) at Bali Renaissance Nusa Dua.

The holding of the ILF is the first time held by UI and will become an annual agenda. This year, ILF 2023 takes the theme “Leading in the Global Turbulence”, with the sub-theme “It’s Indonesia’s Time”.

Deputy Minister of Finance Suahasil Nazara was present to deliver a keynote speech on “The Future of Leadership” in the morning session, and Deputy Minister of State Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Kartika Wirjoatmodjo delivered a speech on “The Role of BUMN Leadership”. The keynote speaker on the second day was Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of The Financial Services Authority (OJK) Mahendra Siregar, and Senior Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia Destry Damayanti was also present as one of the speakers.

Deputy Minister of Finance Suahasil Nazara stated that Indonesia was one of the countries that managed to get out of the pandemic well. During this period, leaders who understand a number of things, e.g. data, community dynamics, and governance, are needed. This was communicated intensely and coordinated with all stakeholders. In executing tasks, one must see the big picture and avoid being trapped in the short term.

Meanwhile, the UI Rector conveyed his opinion that a leader must be adaptive, collaborative, and armed with data analytics. “We realize that the need for educational development for leaders must be met immediately. So far, education training and development has been mostly filled with sending leaders to study abroad at a sizable fee. We can imagine when 107 state-owned enterprises or 130,000 more trading companies had to think about educating their leaders abroad, they absolutely need to spend huge training costs. For example, education at National University of Singapore for 5 days offline is around $ 8870 (Rp 88,700,000) per person, or in the United States, for example, at MIT Sloan, for 8 days offline is around $ 15,300 (Rp 230 million) and all that at beyond accommodation and transportation. The predicted cost incurred is a very large number for change,” said Prof. Ari.

“It’s not just the cost factor, if we pay attention, the world is currently looking at Asia as a growth center, especially ASEAN. Indonesia was even recognized by The Economist as “the overlooked giant” in an article based on the results of its Chief Editor’s interview with President Jokowi during the last G20 Summit. It’s time for us to look at our potential. That’s why we chose the theme of this forum: Leading through Global Turbulence,” he said.

ILF was initiated by the UI Leadership Development Center, which is under the auspices of the Special Business Unit of Daya Makara UI, to answer the needs of leaders for training in order to expand knowledge, broaden horizons, have strategic understanding, and obtain opportunities to build networks between companies or organizations for better collaboration in the future.

Person in Charge of Indonesia Leadership Forum 2023 event, Vice Chancellor for HR and Asset Management UI Prof. Dr. Ir. Dedi Priadi, DEA., further stated, “UI will empower all of its resources (UI has 14 faculties, 1 vocational school, and 2 schools), research results, academics, alumni, associations, and work partners which can all be utilized for knowledge development and leadership practice, as a form of our contribution. From here, we also hope that we can strengthen the triple helix relationship between academics, the business world, and the government for the advancement of Indonesia.”

“The speakers present at Indonesia Leadership Forum 2023 are executives from the government, SOEs, institutions, and the private sector. The experience they bring from these various organizations is a collection of Indonesian intellectual property, wisdom, and cultural values that are extraordinary and can be used to encourage Indonesia’s progress,” added Prof. Dedi.

The Indonesia Leadership Forum event also introduced UI Leadership Development Center, which will provide training for leaders, according to the statement from the Director of Daya Makara, Fakhrudin, who accompanied the UI Rector.

The event on the first day was attended by Alex Denni – Deputy Minister of the Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform, Didiek Hartantyo – President Director of PT Kereta Api Indonesia, Vidjongtius – President Director of PT Kalbe Farma, and Hendra Lembong – Deputy President Director of BCA.

As a special business unit of Universitas Indonesia, PT Daya Makara UI, which has been established in 2008, is now more developed to organize training for organizational/company leaders through programs as needed, with the aim of increasing competence, broadening insights, deepening knowledge, strengthening networks, heightening collaboration and communication.
